` 4 claims. (o1. 45-116) are removable from the top of the table and whenv removed cooperate with the sides of the table to form a screen.
Still another object of this invention is to pro` vide a convertible table and screen of very sturdy construction which may be made entirely of metal if desired, and wherein the principal supporting members are channel bars and angle bars.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, as will hereinafter become apparent, this invention comprises the constructions, combinations and arrangements o1" parts, hereinafter set forth, disclosed and shown on the accompanying drawing. In this drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention used as a screen, the middle plate being shown raised in broken lines,
Figure 2 is a top plan View of Figure 1 showing three sliding plates in position within channel iron frame,
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the invention used as a card table,
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on line 4 4 of Figure 5,
Figure 5 is a rear view ofthe table, the top plate broken away to show slide or guide members for holding the plates, and
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the table, the top plates broken away to show guide members.
There is shown at 10 the convertible table and screen constituting this invention in use as a screen, while at 11 the invention is shown in use as a table, card table, smoking stand, or pedestal.
The screen 10 consists of three channel frames 12, 13 and 14 hinged together as at 15. Each channel frame consists of two channel or U- shaped bars 16 and 17, forming uprights and connected by cross bars 18 and 19. The bars 16, 17, 18 and 19 may be made from any suitable material, either of wood, or of metal such as iron, or if desired of a lighter metal such as aluminum, or any other suitable metal or material.
Y bars 27.
In the same manner all of the remaining elements yet to be described may be likewise made of the same or other suitable material or metal.r
The bar 19 connects-the channel members 16 and 17 in such a manner so as not to obstruct the channel in the channel bars 15 and 17, while the bar 18, suitably spaced from the bottom of the upright' channel bars 16 and 17, obstruct the channels near the bottom of the upright bars 16 and 17 and thus iorrn a support for the removable panels 2i), 21 and 22. At 21' the panel 21 has been shown in partly removed position, it being only necessary to raise upthe panels 20, 21 and 22 to the top of the channel frames l2, i3, and 14 to remove them therefrom, and vice versa to place them in position.
The screen 1G may be used either as a straight screen or may be folded somewhat about the hinges 15 to give it any desired angle for suitv able use in the household.
To convert the'screen 10 into the table 11 the panels 20, 21 and 22 are raised'upwardly to remove them from the channel frames 12, 13 and 14. A table top carriage 24 is hinged to the top of the middle channel frame 13 at 25. The table top carriage 24 consists of a pair of angle bars 26 joined together by another pair of angle The carriage 24 having'been folded upwardly around its hinges 25, the channel frames 12 and 14 are closed about hinges 15 until they are at right angles with the channel frame 13, whereupon a latch bar 28 hinged at 29 to the channel frame 12 is latched over the hook 30 on channel frame 14. In this position the channel frames 12, 13 and 14 provide the supporting legs for the table, and to reinforce the table, an additional latch bar 31 slotted as at 32 is secured by thumb screws 33 across from the channel frame 12 to the channel frame 14. The top portion of this latching bar 31 serves as a further support for the table top carriage 24, the table top carriage 24 being thus supported on one side by its hinges 25 and on the other side by the latch bar 31, as well as the top end of the uprights 16 and 17.
The panels 20, 21 and 22, which are now used as table top panels each have a pair of angle bars 34 secured to the bottom thereof and cooperating with the angle bars 27 to act as complementary thereto. The panel 21 is placed over the table top carriage 24 and its hook members 34 are placed under the hook members 27 of the carriage and the panel 21 is slid to the middle of the table. Then panels 20 and 22 are placed on opposite sides of the panel 21 in the same i compartment 36,
frame members hinged together, a plurality of manner, thus forming a complete table top consisting of the three panels 20, 2l and 22.
Channel members 12 and 14 are each provided on the inside thereof with shelves 35 supporting the compartment 36 being usable for holding smokers articles, playing cards, sewing articles, or other similar household articles, and when the channel frames 12 and 14 are folded about to provide legs for the table l1, the shelves 35 complement each other and form a complete square shaped shelving below the level of the table top.
The novel features and the operation of this device will be apparent from the foregoing disclosure. While the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this is not to be considered limited to the exact form disclosed, and that changes may be made therein within the scope of what is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention..
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:
l. A table comprising a plurality of channel panel members, a table top carriage member secured to one of said channel frame members, means for securing said frame members at an angle to each other to provide table legs, and V"imeans on said channel members cooperating with said table top carriage member to hold said panel members on said table top carriage member to provide a table top, said channel frame members being adjustable to any desired angle 'and being adapted to receive said panels within the channels of the frames to provide an adjustable screen. Y
2. A table comprising a plurality o channel frame members hinged together, a plurality of panel members, a table top carriage member secured to one of said channel frame members, means for securing said frame members at an angle to each other to provide table legs, means on said channel members cooperating with said H'table top carriage member to hold said panel members on said table top carriage member to provide a table top, and shelf means on one of said channel frame members to provide a utility shelf for said table, said channel frame members being adjustable to any desired angle and being' adapted to receive said panels within the channels of the frames to provide an adjustable screen.
3. A table comprising a plurality of channel frame members hinged together, a plurality of panel members, a table top carriage member secured to one of said channel frame members, means for securing said frame members at an angle to each other to provide table legs, means on said channel members cooperating with said table top carriage member to hold said panel members on said table top carriage member to provide a table top, and shelf means on some of said channel frame members, said shelf means complementing each other to form a complete intermediate utility shelf when said channel frame members are at the angle to each other to provide a table support, said channel frame members being adjustable to any desired angle and being adapted to receive said panels within the channels of the frames to provide an adjustable screen.
4. A table comprising three upright channel frame members, hinge means securing two of said channel frame members to the opposite side of the third channel frame member, each chan# nel frame member comprising a pair of oppositely disposed upright channel bars and a pair of cross bars securing said upright channel bars together, the lower cross bar providing a slot in the channel of the channel bars, a plurality of panel members, a table top carriage member hinged to said third channel frame member, and a shelf member secured to each of the other two channel frame members, latch bars for securing together said two outer channel frame members at right angles to said third channel frame member with said table top carriage member supported on said frame member, angle bars forming part of said table top carriage member, and cooperating oppositely disposed angle bars on each panel member, whereby said panel members may be placed on said table top carriage member to provide a table top therefor, and whereby the shelf members complementing each other to provide an intermediate utility shelf for the table.
