Description

April 27, 1954 E. ALLEN DRAWER CONSTRUCTION FOR CABINETS Filed Aug. 7, 1950 Eddieflzzen INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
Patented Apr. 27, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE I Eddie Allen, Washington, D. 0. Application August 7, 1950, Serial No. 178,057
This invention relates to cabinets, and particularly to cabinets designed for use by hair dressers, manicurists or the like, theprimary object of the invention being to provide a drawer which is so constructed and arranged that it may be with- :drawn from the cabinet to expose the entire contents of the drawer, the drawer remaining in a horizontal or supported position providing a shelf for easy access to the articles contained therein. 7 Another object of the invention is to provide a drawer which may be readily removed for use as a tray, should it be desired to carry the tray to various locations, for use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the lower portion of the hair dressers cabinet, constructed in accordance with the invention, the drawer being shown in its extended position for use as a shelf.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the lower portion of the cabinet illustrating the drawer and its supporting slide as connected.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view illustrating one end of the drawer slide and the inner end of the drawer as disconnected.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a cabinet which in the present showing is especially designed for use as a hair dressers cabinet, the reference character 6 indicating an adjustable mirror at the front of the cabinet which may be adjusted to the desired angle for the use and satisfaction of the person seated in front of the mirror.
The cabinet is provided with a drawer compartment 1, the side walls of which are formed with grooves 8. Secured to the bottom 9 of the drawer compartment, are the guides I0 that are arranged adjacent to the side edges of the drawer compartment, while at the center of the drawer compartment is the guide II. The reference character I2 indicates the drawer slide which is of a length to extend across the drawer compartment, the slide I2 comprising spaced bars I3 and I4, which are held in spaced relation with respect to each other by means of the spacer bars l5 disposed adjacent to the ends thereof.
2 Claims. 01.. 312L308) 5 v I. The bar I3-is'formed with extensions I6 at the ends thereof, which extensions fit within the grooves 8 formed in the sidewalls of the drawer compartmentto hold the drawer slide in a true horizontal position. Disposed at opposite sides of the drawer compartment are guide bars I1 that are spaced from the bottom, the guide bars I1 being fitted in the notches I8 formed at the ends of the rear bar I3 to further hold the drawer slide against vertical movement. Recesses I9 are formed in the lower edge of the bar I3, at the ends thereof providing a clearance so that the drawer slide may rest on the guides Ill. The drawer slide is also provided with a recess I9 formed in the bottom thereof, in which the guide bar I I is disposed to maintain the drawer slide in true transverse relation with respect to the bottom at all times.
The drawer proper is indicated by the reference character 20 and is provided with spring clips 2! extending rearwardly therefrom, the clips 2| being provided with openings through which the screws 22 extend, securing the clips to the upper edge of the drawer.
These spring clips 2| extend in parallel spaced relation with the rear wall of the drawer so that they may be positioned over the upper edge of the bar I4 removably securing the drawer to the drawer slide.
With this construction it will be obvious that the drawer may be withdrawn to its full extent exposing the entire contents of the drawer, making it unnecessary to slide the drawer only partially from the drawer opening in order to remove articles therefrom and still maintain the drawer in an open and horizontal position as a shelf.
Should it be desired, the drawer may be lifted so that th clips disengage the bar I4, whereupon the drawer may be used as a tray and carried to different locations for use by the hair dresser, or person using the cabinet.
The drawer may be of any desired construction, that is with regard to partitions, and in the present showing a pivoted tray 23 is provided within the drawer and secured therein by the pivoted arms 24 on which the tray 23 is mounted. When the tray is elevated as in Fig. 1 of the drawing, th tray may be used in supporting various articles taken from the compartment 25 of the drawer. When the tray 23 is not in use it may be swung downwardly where it will be concealed in the drawer. To position the drawer within the cabinet it is only necessary to hang the clips 2| over the ends of the bar I 4 connecting the drawer and drawer slide, so that when the drawer is moved inwardly the slide will be connected therewith to hold the drawer in an extended position when the drawer is opened.
It migh be further stated that the top of the drawer compartment is provided with openings 22 disposed directly over the clips 2| when the drawer is in its extended position permitting of the ready removal of the drawer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a cabinet having a drawer compartment formed with horizontally disposed grooves in the side walls thereof, said grooves constituting drawer guides, of a sliding removable drawer including a drawer slide embodying spaced horizontally disposed bars ex tending transversely within the drawer compartment with their side faces disposed vertically, extensions at the end of one of said bars slidable ngitud nally f the compartment in said grooves, a drawer section slidable within said compartment, spring clips extending outwardly from the inner end of the drawer at the upper edge thereof adapted to hook over the upper end of said drawer slide, removably securing said drawer and slide together, and said clips and slide providing means. for holding said; drawer in a horizontal position when extended to itsv limit.
2. The combination with a cabinet having a drawer compartment. formed with horizontally disposed grooves in the side walls thereof, said iii grooves constituting drawer guides, said grooves having their forward ends terminating short of the front end of such drawer compartment, providing stops at the forward ends of said grooves, of a sliding removable drawer including a drawer slide embodying spaced horizontally disposed bars extending transversely within said drawer compartment with the side faces thereof disposed vertically, extensions at the ends of said slide movable within, said grooves adapted to engage said stops limiting outward movement of said drawer, a drawer section slidable within the compartment, spring clips extending from the inner end of said drawer section and disposed at the upper edge of the drawer section, said clips adapted to hook over the upper edge of said slide between said spaced horizontally disposed bars removably securing the drawer and slide together, and said clips and slide adapted to hold said drawer section in a true horizontal position when extended fromw said compartment.
