POST-CARD CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed August 8, 1907, Serial No. 387,720. Renewed May 18, 1908. Serial No. 433,596.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED A. DABNEY and WALTER SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Card Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in cabinets designed more especially for holding picture post cards.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a cabinet capable of holding a large number of cards in such a manner that one card of each kind will be displayed and may be readily removed for sale, leaving another card of its kind in the same place exposed to view, this being accomplished by its simple and economical construction capable of easy manipulation for the replenishment of the post cards.
With these and other objects in view the invention includes the features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A cabinet embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 a transverse section, Fig. 3 an enlarged side elevation of one of the drawers.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral l designates a cabinet which may be made of any suitable height and depth and width according to the number of post cards and kinds of cards which it is to contain. It is provided with a plurality of inclined shelves 2 divided by vertical partitions 3 into compartments 4 of a size corresponding to the size of the post cards. The top 5 of the cabinet is conveniently sloped so as to be parallel with the inclined shelves 2 and each inclined shelf is rovided at its front edge with a ledge 6. llVithin each com artment 4 is located a removable post car carrier which we prefer to have removable through the rear of the case.
We prefer to make this rest 8 and the rod 7 of one single piece of wire which is bent into a loop or eye as shown at 9, and then carried upwardly and across to form the rectangular loop or rest 8, the eyes 9 being connected by a transverse rod 10 to brace the same at the front. A cross bar 11 has eyes through which the rods 7 pass and carries an upright 12, designed to bear against the rearmost post card, this cross bar being preferably weighted so as to act as a follower. The rear ends of the rods carry a section 13 which fits the rear opening to the com artment 4 and closes the same, and is provi ed with a handle 14 by which the carrier may be withdrawn from the compartment when new cards are to be placed therein.
From the foregoing description it is thought that the operation of the cabinet will be readily apparent. The retaining device 8 serves to hold the front card ln position to be viewed, the wire not interfering to any material extent with the observation of the card, while at the same time the front 'card may be readily removed; the cards moving downward upon the inclined wires to occupy the space vacated by the cardremoved and the slide bar ll and follower likewise moving down until the last card has been removed when the follower will be eX- posed. The card holder may be then withdrawn from the rear of the compartment and a fresh supply of cards placed thereon.
Having' thus described our invention, what we claim is l. In combination, a cabinet having a lplurality of inclined compartments open at oth ends and a card retaining device in each compartment comprising parallel wires having an upwardly extending card rest at one end and a handle member at the opposite end.
2. In combination, a cabinet having a compartment open at both ends, a card retaining device removably seated in said compartment and comprising a pair of parallel wires having an upright retaining device at one end, a follower slidably carried by said wires, and a handle at the opposite end of said wires for withdrawing them from the compartment, substantially as described.
3. A card holding device comprising a In testimony whereof, We afx our signapair of parallel Wires having an upright 1'el tures in presence of tWo Witnesses. taining device at one end formed integral FRED A. DABNEY. therewith and eyes at the junction of said re? WALTER SMITH. 5 taining device, and arallel portions of the fitnessesz Wires, and a cross rod held in said eyes, sub- ROBERT W. WOOD,
stantially as described. J. M. DULANEY.
