SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,662, dated September22, 1903.
Application filed April 8, 1903, Serial No. 151,567. (No model.)
To all whom', it may concern: y
Be it known that we, MARY VE. FRANCISCO, and JOSEPH Finis MARTIN, citizens of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and YState of California, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in boxes, and especially in exhibiting-boxes designed for use in holding datesad other articles of merchandise which it may be desired to proiect and to which access may be conveniently had from time to time; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our invention with the sliding sash lowered and the apron turned out to form a Fig. 2 is a vertical section of thebox with the sliding sash raised and the apron adjusted upon the top of the box, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on about line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The box A has a bottom B, sides C, back D, and top E, is open at thefront, and is provided at such open front with a guide-frame F, having grooves Gr, in which slide the sash H, the lower portion'of the front-or guideframe F being glazed at I, such fixed glazing extending about one-half the height of the box, as shown in Fig. 2. In the construction shown the guide-frame may be secured to the front of the box by screws, (see J in Fig. l.) The box is also provided with a false bottom K, carried on rods L, which extend outwardly through vertical slots M inv the sides C and' connected with battons N, arranged on the outer side of the sides C and provided with clamping-screws O, which may be tightened to secure the false bottom in any desired vertical adjustment to adapt the box for use with packages of dates or the like of diderent heights.
The sash I-I slides vertically in the guides G, and the apron l? is hinged at one edge at P' to the upper edge of the sliding sash, so
it can be turned over the top of the box, as
5e shown in Fig. 2, when the sash is closed, and
"thus operate to hold the sash elevated, can
be turned out to the position shown in Fig. 1 to serve as a shelf in handling the dates or other commodity stored in the box, and can be turned up, as indicated in dot-ted lines l, Fig. 2, against the outer face of the guideframe F, and by means of its clamping devices operate to hold the sliding sash in a position intermediate those shown in full lines, Figs. 1 and 2. As shown and as preferred, the clamping devices are in the form of flanges Q on lthe apron P and arranged to overlap the opposite sides of the guide-frame F and being sloped or beveled on their inner faces at Q' in order to clamp the guide-frame when ad j usted to the full-line position shown in Fig. 2.
innholding dates and the like, comprisinga box proper having its sides provided with the By thus sloping or beveling the inner faces of the anges Q at Q' the apron longitudinal slots, a false bottom, supportingrods projecting from said bottom through said slots, a bar outside'the box and to which said supporting-rods are secured, means for clamping the bar in connection with the box for holding the bottom in different adjustments, a guide-frameV secured to the open front of the box and having a lower fixed glazed section, a sliding sash movable vertically in the guide-frame, andan apron hinged at one end to the upper edge of Ythe sliding sash, and foldable upon the ntop of the box, when the sash is closed or extending ont to form a shelf when the sash is lowered and lying in against p the face of the guide-frame and sloped or beveled on its in ner edge for engagement with the guide-frame in diierent adjustments of the apron, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a box for holding dates and the like, a sliding sash at the front of said box, and an apron hinged at one edge to the sliding sash and arranged to be turned loo upon the top of the box, when the sash is closed or extending out to form a shelf when the sash is lowered, substantially as set forth. 3. The combination of the box, guides for the slidingsash, a sash sliding in said guides, and an apron hinged at its inner edge to the upper edge of the sash, and formed on its inner edge to bind in engagement with the sashguides in the diierent adjustments of the sash and apron, substantially as set forth.
4. The Combination of a box for dates and the like, a sliding sash and an apron hinged thereto, and sloped or beveled on its inner edge, to bind upon the box when adjusted into engagement therewith, substantially as set forth. V5. A box for dates and the like having at its front a lower ixed Closure or section, a sliding sash to Close the upper portion of the front of the box, and an apron hinged in conneetion with the said sliding sash,V substantially as set'forth.
6. A box for dates and the like, provided at its open front side with a guide-frame having a lower section or Closure, an upper sliding sash, and an apron carried by said sliding sash, substantially as described.
