' TE jif- LETTER-BOX.
To all Iwhom it may concern Be it known that we, MIKE LIGUSH and PAUL GERFY, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at Scalp Level, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Letter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in letter boxes.
An object of the invention is to provide a letter box in which all mail matter placed therein will be guarded against interference by unauthorized persons.
A further object of the invention is to provide a letter box provided with means disposed interiorly thereof and operated by the closure gate, to be elevated and constitute a platform for the reception of mail.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention will be more specifically described in detail and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing` by similar reference characters throughout the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-sectional view of our improved box. Fig. Q, is a rear elevational view of the same with the back partially broken away to illustrate our invention, and, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of our box illustrating the guard plate and its operating mechanism.
Referring more specically to the drawing, the reference letter A indicates a letter box of the usual construction provided with the front mail receiving opening B.
Our invention which is applicable to the construction of mail box now generally used, consists of a plate 10 of slightly less dimensions than the interior of the box and is hinged to the front wall thereof as at 11. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, this plate normally assumes an approximately vertical position, which plate is adapted to be raised to a horizontal position by mechanism to be hereinafter described.
A gate or closure 12 of oblong form is mounted on a horizontal pivot 13 in the front mail-receiving opening B and as clearly shown extends an equal distance into Specification of Letters Patent.

and out of the box A. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the gate 12 is performing the function of a closure for said opening. Pivoted to the inner face of the front wall of the box A and spaced from the front opening thereof is a lever 111 having connected to one of its ends a link 15, the other end of said link being connected to the gate 12 as at 16 adjacent the inner edge of said gate. An eye 17 is secured to the inner face of the box and acts as a guide for the link 15 in its vertical movements. A rod 18 is hingedly connected to the other end of the lever 1-/1 and is guided in its vertical movement by the eye 19 similar in form to the eye 17 and also connected to the inner face of the front wall of the box. The upper end of the rod 18 is preferably bent to circular form as at 20. It is therefore evident from the above description of the construction that when the gate 12 is moved from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in full lines in said figure that the inner side of the gate 12 will be lowered and with it the link 15. The link 15 being connected to one end of the lever 14C will therefore lower the end to which it is connected and elevate the opposite end and in so doing, the rod 18 will be elevated and guided through the eye 19 while the upper end 2O of the rod 18 engages beneath the platform 10 and elevates it from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in full lines in said ligure.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to conne ourselves to such showing as various forms, modifications and arrangements of the several parts may be had without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
What we claim as new is A letter box provided with a front opening, a closure plate hinged in said opening and projecting into the box, a lever hinged to the inner side of the front wall of said box, a link connected to the inner end of the closure and to one end of said lever, a guard plate hinged tothe inner side of the front Wall of said box und normally assulnln testimony Wlieleof We zux our signaing` an approximately vertical position, and tures in presence of two Witnesses.
a vertically guided rod connected to the MKE LGUSH. other end of said level' and adapted to en- PAUL GERFY. gage the under side of said plate upon the opening of the closure to cause the saine to assume a horizontal position.
