STATES SHOW-CASE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. COBB, a itizen of the United States, residing at Sharon Hill, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to show cases, and it has particular relation to the construction and arrangement of the rear door for permitting access to the interior of the case, which door provides means for protecting the contents from dust, flies and the like during the periods when access to the contents is not desired.

The principal object of my invention is to rovide a simple and inexpensive form of door for show cases which may be readily manufactured in various sizes, and which, when in use, may be manipulated quickly and easily without binding.

In my previous Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,044,749, dated Nov. 19, 1912, I have shown a form of sectional show case or counter guard particularly adapted for use in and stores, and in department stores, in which glass panels on the top and front side were provided for protecting the materials displayed on the counter top and which was open in the rear for ready and convenient access by the attendant. I have found that in some instances it is desirable that means he provided for closing the rear open space during the periods when access to the interior of the case is not required, and my invention therefore contemplates a form of door for closing this rear open space, but which form of door however is adaptable as well to other types of show cases.

The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, looking from the rear, of a portion of a show case provided with a door for closing the rear and embodying the main features of my present invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the structure shown in Fig. 1; and

Referring to the drawings, in the particular embodiment of my invention therein shown, 10 is a store counter, of any preferred construction, to the edges of the top board 11 of which are secured the

12 and 13 forming ledges for the retention of the articles placed upon the counter.

14 is the end support or frame and 15 is one of the intermediate supports or frames of the show case proper, each of which supports or frames consists of a horizontal top portion 16, an inclined front leg 17 and an inclined rear leg 18. Adjustably secured to the rear leg 18 is a foot bar 19 having a horizontal lug portion 20 for securing the member 19 to the rear portion of the counter. The lower or extreme end of the inclined front leg 17 of each of the

14 and 15 may be provided with a vertical lug portion 21, or other suitable means for securing said leg to the counter or the front rail 13 thereof may be provided. The foot member 19 as before stated is adjustably secured to the inclined rear leg 18 for the purpose of adjusting the frames, which are usually made in stock sizes, to varying inclinations of the top surface of the counter.

14 or 15 serves respectively for the support of horizontal panels 24 and inclined panels 25, of glass, which serve to guard and protect the articles which are placed upon the counter top from contamination by dust, flies and other objectionable things.

14 and 15 in any suitable manner, such for example as is described in detail in my previous Letters Patent No. 1,044,749 hereinbefore referred to. There is also described and shown in said patent means for preventing longitudinal separation of the glass panels from the frames, as well as for stiffening the structure generally, comprising a series of horizontally extending tie rods 36 which are secured to the rear inclined legs 18 near the top thereof in a suitable manner as particularly described in said Letters Patent.

The door forming the principal novel part of my present invention comprises plate 50, preferably made of thin sheet metal and having secured thereto, near the top and bottom, longitudinally extending bars 51 which serve to stiffen the plate 50 and thereby permit the same to be made of thinner material while preserving the necessary rigidity and shape. lrfounted in the bars 51 preferably near the ends thereof are transversely extending rods 52 maintained a short distance above the plate 50 by means of short angular extensions 53, each of said rods 52 extending from one of the longitudinal bars 51 to the other of said bars, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The rods 52 are so located as to include the tie rods 36 between said rods 52 and the plate 50 of the door, the said tie rods 86 thereby serving in conjunction with the rods 52 as a support for the door as well as a guide for the proper location thereof in its closed position and also during its operation to the open position.

The rods 52 on account of their arrangement and extension above the surface of the plate 50 also serves as handles for the con venient manipulation of the door. To further insure the proper guiding of the door to its open position there are provided adjacent each end of said door and secured to the frames lt and 15 horizontally mounted bars 54 preferably angle shaped in cross section, and having up-turned lips 55 at their inner or front ends which serve as stops to limit the movement of the door at the final open position.

In order to cause all the doors in a series of sections of a show case to rest in the same location with respect to the frames and thereby present a neat and uniform ap pearance, each foot member 19 is provided with a stop member comprising a short bar 56 extending beyond the side margins of said foot member to form an abutment against which the door will rest in its closed position. The projecting portions of the bar 56 are preferably provided with a covering 57 of rubber or the like to eliminate to some extent the noise and jar which would otherwise occur when the door is closed.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and efficient form of door for closing the rear portion of show cases or counter guards which may be inexpensively constructed and which is so arranged that it can be manipulated readily and easily.

It will of course be understood that while the door as herein described is particularly adaptable for use in connection with the show case described and shown in my previnovaaea.

Having thus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a show case or counter guard, a door comprising a plate, rods supported from said plate and extending a short distance above the surface thereof, and means carried by a stationary portion of the structure engaged by said rods to form a guide and support for the door.

2. In a show case or counter guard, a door comprising a plate, stifiening bars secured to said plate and extending longitudinally thereon, rods mounted in said stiffening bars and extending transversely a short distance above the surface of the plate, and means carried by a stationary portion of the structure engaged by said rods to form a guide and support for the door.

3. A show case or counter guard comprising a series of spaced frames, glass panels mounted on the top and one side of said frames, and a door for closing the other side comprising a plate, rods supported from said plate and extending above the surfacethereof a short distance therefrom, and a member secured to said frames and engaged by said rods to form a guide and support for the door.

4. A show case or counter guard comprising a series of spaced frames, glass panels mounted on the top and one side of said frames, tie rods extending between said frames and secured thereto near the top thereof, and a door for closing the other side of the structure comprising a plate, rods supported from said plate and extending above the surface thereof a short distance therefrom, said rods engaging the tie rods to form a guide and support for the door.

5. A show case or counter guard comprising a series of spaced frames, glass panels mounted on the top and one side of said frames, and a door for closing the other side comprising a plate, rods supported from said plate and extending above the surface thereof a short distance therefrom, a member secured to said frames and engaged by said rods to form a guide and support for the door, and an additional guide and support for the door comprising horizontally extending bars secured to the inner portions of the frames near the top thereof.

6.
