JOHN JOSEPH CHARLES SMITH, OF SOMERVILLE, ASSIGN OR TO THE METALLIC OOM- PRESSI ON-OAS'IIN G COMPANY,
Leners Parent Nb. 99,020, dared January 18, 1870.
OE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
wen-* `IMIPROVElMENT IN BELL-PULLS.
m The Schedule referred to in lthese -Letters Patent and making part of the same.
. LJ ons JOSEPH CHARLES SMITH,'oi` Somerville, in
the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Bell-Pull, which is described as follows:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.`
My invention is intended primarily, though not eX- o1usively,for outside door-bells; and consists, essentially, ofa cylindrical hub, having a partial rotation in 'a plane perpendicular .to the wall or other surface to which thebell-pull is applied, and operated by a knob,
projecting from the hub in a direction coincident with the plane of its rotation, the saidhub being constructed with concentric segmental flanges, which project from one end or faceplate of the hub, in such ainanner as to adapt the wholefor casting. Ot' these segmental anges, one serves for the attachment of the bell-wire 0r chain, and a helical spring, which retracts the knob when released; and the other to mask or close the recess' in which the hub works, all as hereinafter described.
General Descriptiony ywith Reference to the Drawing.
B. B, forming the bearings or attachments of an arbor, C, upon which the hub D turns.
The handle E, for turning thehnb, rises'obliqnely from it, and terminates in a knob, F, projecting horizontally.
The bell-chain G Vis attached: to a stud, h,- upon a segmental flange, H, at the other end of the helical spring I, whose Ainnerlend is attached to the arbor O,
so as to restore the parts to their normal position, represented in iig. 1, when the knob is released.
The outer concentric ilange J serves to mask or cover the recess in which the, hubworks, and all the various parts of the rotating hub, with its handle E F, are' so constructed and arranged that they may be readily cast in onepiece, by means ofjmy compresserprocess, described in Letters Patent heretofore granted.
The 'handle projects in such a position, that `a person desiring to pull the'bell, whether familiar with the construction ofthe device ornot, in drawing the knob outward from the wall, willalso bear downward, so that a child, or other person with little strength, can, with great ease, apply all needful force to ring the bell.
`I claim, as my invention-'- The hub D, constructed with' the concentric seg? mental'anges H J, handle E, and knob F, and eniployed in connection wit-li the arbor C and helical spring I, all applied and' arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN JOSEPH OHAS. SMITH.
