IMPROVED STEAM AND AIR-WHISTLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thy lame.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BROWN, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have iuvented anew and useful Improvement in Whistles to he sounded either by steam or air; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.

The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in whistles to be sounded by air or steam and consists in the construction of the same whereby a stream of air or steam issuing from the narrow openf ing of a attened pipe shall impinge against the edge of a cylindiical box, producing a sound, the quality of which may be varied as required, by increasing or diminishing the distance between the pipe and the edge of the box.
In the drawings-- A is a pipe, provided at one end with a screw, for fitting it to a boiler-pipe, and flattened at the other end, so that the air or steam may issue in a narrow sheet, at B.
D 'is a cylindrical box, open at one side, and set with reference to the pipe A, so that the edge of the opening presents itself` to the stream of air or steam as it issues from the orifice at B.
This box is provided with an arm, E, by which it is attached to the pipe A, and by means of which it may be moved along the pipe, thus diminishing or increasing the distance between the edge of the box and the oriiice from which the air or steam issues, so varying the quality of the sound produced.
The box D may also be constructed in one piece with the pipe A, and immovable, and the quality of the sound varied by means of a gauge, made ot' a sheet of metal, fitted to the inside of the box, and diminishing or enlarging the opening by sliding up or down, and held in place hy a screw fitted to a slot in the box.
The advantages of' my invention consist iu the/facility and low cost of the manufacture of whistles, and its adaptability to all purposes, whether of utility or amusement, for which they may be required.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isc The construction of whistles with the flattened end of a pipe, and with an opening in the side of the cylindrical box, so constructed and combined with the pipe that the distance between the aperture from which the air or steam issues, and the edge upon which it strikes, may be increased or diminished, whereby to vary the quality of the sound, all arranged as herein made known.
