STRIKING-BAG DRUM.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP S. MnDA-R'r, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Striking-Bag Drums, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to striking bag drums, and has for its various objects: First, to provide a durable and substantial formation and combination of parts, wherein the drum can be readily adjusted in a vertical direction as required, and rigidly and firmly held at such adjustment. Second to provide a simple and eflicient structural formation and arrangement of the head or web of the drum and its marginal supporting rim, whereby the natural shrinkage of the drum head or web is permitted without liability to checking or warping out of shape, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a plan view of a striking bag drum, embodying the present invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail plan, with parts in section, of a portion of the drum. Fig. 4L, is a section of the same on line :r-w, Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a vertical section on line m-a3, of a modification. Fig. 6, is a side elevation of the same.

Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the respective upper and lower brackets secured in vertical separated relation to a wall or other vertical portion of the building by bolts or like fastening means.

3 is a cylindrical slideway disposed vertically between the brackets 1 and 2 aforesaid, and connected thereto by end tenons 4 fitting sockets in said brackets and secured therein by cross pins as shown.

5 is the drum carrying spider, which in the preferred form of the preent improvement comprises a vertically disposed central guide sleeve 6 which embraces and slides on the slideway 3 aforesaid, and is clamped thereon at any desired adjustment, preferably by a transverse clamping bolt 7 passing through cars at each side of a vertical slit in the wall of said guide sleeve 6, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. sides of the guide sleeve 6, the spider arms 8 extend transversely and have their outer ends formed with receiving sockets for the inner ends of the carrying rails of the drum head.

9 is a vertical screw shaft journaled in lugs 10 on the brackets 1 and 2 aforesaid, and having screw-threaded engagement with an ear or lug on the aforesaid guide sleeve 6, so that as it is rotated in one direction or the other, vertical movement in an upward or downward direction will be imparted to the guide sleeve 6, spider 5 and striking bag drum carried thereby, to attain the required elevation of the drum suitable to the performer. In the described arrangement, the screw shaft 9 by its non-axial attachment to the guide sleeve 6 and brackets 1, 2, acts to hold said sleeve and its aforesaid accessories from any turning movement on the cylindrical slideway 3, aforesaid.

. 12 is a handle on the lower end of the screw shaft 9 for the convenient manual rotation of the same.

In the modified form of supporting brackets and slideway illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the upper and lower brackets 1 and 2 are integrally connected by a cylindrical sleeve 3, the bore of which constitutes a slideway for a tubular vertical stem 7, the upper end of which is horizontally branched to form carrying arms 8 for the attachment of the longitudinal carrying rails 13 of the apparatus. At its lower end the tubular stem 7 is closed and formed with an axial screw-threaded orifice for engagement with a vertically disposed screw-threaded operating shaft 9, the lower end of which is journaled in a closed head at the lower end of the slideway sleeve 3, and provided with an operating handle 12, as shown.

13 are the pair of carrying rails for the drum head, above referred to, arranged in parallel relation, and attached at their rear ends to the aforesaid sockets of the carrying spider 5.

14 is the flat circular drum head or web, and 15 the annular stiffening rim or border of the same, and which when supported in a horizontal plane in the manner heretofore described constitutes the abutment for the impacts of the striking bag in actual use. Both of said members are formed of wood or other usual material, and in the present improvement said parts are secured together by a plurality of intermediate attaching blocks 16, secured by screws or other usual means to the drum head or web 14, and provided at their outer ends with tongues 17 and adapted to fit in a circular groove 18 in the inner wall of the stiffening rim or border 15, and as so constructed provides a very substantial connection between the parts, and at the same time admits of the natural shrinkage of the wood of the drum head or web 14:, without liability to checking or warping of the same. In the preferred construction illustrated in Fig. 1, the same means of attachment is provided between the drum head 14:, and the carrying rails 13, aforesaid.

Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a striking bag drum support; the combination of a pair of attaching brackets, a vertical cylindrical slideway carried by said brackets, a carrying spider guided vertically by said slideway, a vertical adjusting screw having operative connection with said spider, a pair of horizontal rails attached to the upper end of said spider, and a striking bag drum attached to the outer portions of said rails, substantially as set forth.

2. In a striking bag drum support, the combination of a pair of attaching brackets, a vertical cylindrical slideway disposed between said brackets, a carrying spider formed with a central guiding sleeve moving upon said slideway, a vertical adjusting screw journaled in said brackets and operatively engaging a lateral ear on said sleeve, means for clamping said sleeve to said slideway, a pair of horizontal rails attached to the upper end of the spider, and

the same comprising a pair of opposed earsarranged at opposite edges of a vertical slit in said sleeve and a transverse clamping bolt intersecting said ears, a pair of horizontal rails attached to the upper end of the spider, and a striking bag drum attached to the outer portions of said rails, substantially as set forth.

4. A striking bag drum comprising, a central drum head or web, an annular marginal rim formed with a groove in its inner wall, and a plurality of blocks attached to the head or web and provided with tongues engaging the grooves aforesaid, substantially as set forth.

5. A striking bag drum comprising, a central drum head or web, an annular marginal rim formed with a groove in its inner wall, a pair of supporting rails for said drum and rim, and a plurality of blocks attached to the head or web and provided with tongues engaging the grooves aforesaid, substantially as set forth.
