SNARE-STRAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 27, 1910. Serial No. 599,621.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. Vana- MAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Snare-Strainer, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a snare holder for drums of such character that the lower ring of the drum may be adjusted, in order to properly adjust the tension of the lower head, without causing a slippage of the snares upon the head.
A further object of my invention is to so mount the snares that the tension thereof may be readily adjusted and also such that the snares may be quickly withdrawn from the head and replaced against the head.
The objects of my invention contemplate the production of such improvements in details of construction as may be hereinafter pointed out.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is an axial section of a drum constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 an elevation of the adjustable head which I have provided for one end of the snares, a portion being shown in section; Fig. 8 a section on line 3, 3 of Fig. 2, with the parts in snare tightening position; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 with the parts in snare releasing position; Fig. 5 a section on line 5, 5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 a plan of the stationary holder for one end of the snares.
In the drawings, 10 indicates the main cylindrical open ended body of the drum,
11 the upper head ring, 12 the upper head,
13 the upper hoop, 14 the lower head ring, 15 the lower head, 16 the lower hoop and 17 the tightening bolts extending between the two hoops 13 and 16, all of these parts being of any desired and usual form and construction, except that the hoop 16 is provided at opposite sides with notches 18, 18 through which the snares 19 may pass and opposite these notches the ring 14 is slightly rounded as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The snares 19 are preferably formed by doubling a plurality of snare members and the free ends are clamped in the clamp shown in Fig. 6, said clamp comprising a main bar 21 carried by legs 22, and a co6perating bar 23 connected to bar 21 by screws 24, said screws serving to draw the bar 23 toward bar 21. Each leg 22 is provided with a suitable foot 25 through which a clamping bolt 26 may be passed into and through the main body 10. In order to firmly clamp the snares between bars 21 and 23, I transversely convex the bar 21 and correspondingly transversely concave the bar 23 as indicated in Fig. 6. The doubled ends of the snares 19 are threaded through holes 81 formed through the main bar of a yoke 32, the ends of the arms of the yoke being pivoted upon a pin 33 extending between the arms 84 of a lever 35 which is pivoted at 36, parallel with pin 83, upon the ears 37 of a carrier 38. The carrier 38 is provided with a pair of transversely projecting headed pins 39, the shanks of which are adapted to slide freely in a slot 41 formed in a supporting bracket 42, the main plate of which lies parallel with the axis of the drum. The bracket 42 is provided at one end with a pair of legs 43 each of which is provided with a foot- 44 through which a clamping bolt 45 may be passed into and through the main body 10. Bracket 42 at its opposite end is provided with an outwardly projecting arm 46 having a slot 47 in its outer end. The slot 47 is adapted to receive the portion 48 of the shank of an adjusting screw 49, said portion 48 being flanked at each end by a collar or enlarged portion 51 which engages the opposite faces of the arm 46. Screw 49 is provided with a suitable knurled head 52 and its threaded portion is passed into a nut 58 carried by an outwardly projecting arm 54 formed at one end of the carrier 38, the arrangement being such that rotation of the screw 49 will serve to adjust the carrier 88 longitudinally of the bracket 42, the headed pin 39 keeping the carrier in place upon the bracket.
In operation the parts are normally assembled in the position indicated in Fig. 1 and, as the weather conditions require, the ring 14 may be adjusted longitudinally of the body 10 so as to decrease or increase the tension of the drum head 15 and this movement may be accomplished without producing any movement of the snares and without producing any movement of the head 15 relative to the snares so that there will be no sliding of the snares upon the head as is the case in the usual construction where one end of the snares is carried by the body of the drum and the other end by the adjacent hoop. In order to throw the snares away from the head, the lever 35 is thrown to the position shown in Fig. 4;, the yoke 31 swinging to the position shown in that figure so that there is no tendency to produce a kink in the snares. IVhen the parts are returned to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the center pin 33 is carried slightly beyond the center of pivots 36 so that the tension of the snares holds the parts in adjust-ed position.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a drum, the combination with the main body, the head rings, the heads, hoops, clamping bolts and snares, of two snare holding brackets, each secured to the main body, and one comprising a main port-ion secured to the drum body, snare engaging portion slidably mounted on the main portion lengthwise of the axis of the drum, means for shifting said sliding portion upon the main portion to vary the tension of the snares, and means for independently shifting the snares relative to said sliding portion to release or replace the snares.
2. In a drum, the combination with the main body, the head rings, the heads, hoops, clamping bolts and snares, of two snareholding brackets, each secured to the main body, one of said brackets comprising a main slotted body, a carrier slidably mounted upon said body parallel with the axis of the drum and provided with headed pins passing through the slot of the main body, means for shifting said carrier upon the main body, a lever pivoted upon the carrier, and snareengaging means carried by said lever.
In a drum, the combination with the main body, the head rings, the heads, hoops, clamping bolts and snares, of two snareholding brackets, each secured to the main body, one of said brackets comprising a main body, a carrier slidably mounted upon said body parallel with the axis of the drum, neans for shifting said carrier upon the main body, a lever pivoted upon the carrier,
and snare-engaging means carried by said lever.
I. In a drum, the combination with the main body, the head rings, the heads, hoops, clamping bolts and snares, of two snareholding brackets, each secured to the main body, one of said brackets comprising a main slotted body, a carrier slidably mounted upon said body parallel with the axis of the drum and provided with headed pins passing through the slot of the main body, means for shifting said carrier upon the main body, a lever pivoted upon the carrier, and a snareengaging yoke pivoted upon said lever upon an axis eccentric to the axis of the lever and beyond said axis relative to the snares.
5. In a drum, the combination with the main body, the head rings, the heads, hoops, clamping bolts and snares, of two snareholding brackets, each secured to the main vbodv one of said brackets com )risin a main slotted body, a carrier slidably mounted upon said body parallel with the axis of the drum and provided with headed pins passing through the slot of the main body, means for shifting said carrier upon the main body, a lever pivoted upon the carrier, and a snareengaging yoke pivoted upon said lever upon an axis eccentric to the axis of the lever.
6. A snare holder for drums comprising a main bracket, a carrier slidably mounted upon said main bracket, means for shifting the carrier upon the main bracket, a lever pivoted upon the carrier, and a snare engaging member pivoted upon said lever upon an axis substantially parallel with but eccentric to the axis of the lever and beyond said axis relative to the snares.
