UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY THEOPHEL, OF AKRON, OHIO.
DRUM-SNARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,590, dated September 16, 1890.
Application filed June 10, 1890. Serial No. 354,980. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY THEOPHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drum-Snares, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvement is to produce a new and improved snare for drums, that shall be easily applied, effective in operation, and detachable at will.
Myinvention consists in certain mechanical parts and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and then specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved snare, showing a part of the drum in section to indicate its application; Fig. 2, aplan of the same, showing part of the drum-hoop for the same purpose; Fig. 3, an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, A and B are metallic plates united by screws 0, between which are clamped elastic wires D. The under plate B is preferably heavier than the upper, for the twofold purpose of adding strength to the retaining device for the wires D and affording a strong grasp for the screws 0. The rear part of the plate A extends beyond the plate B, is preferably reduced in width, and is bent upward, curved, and returned downward, as shown, to pass over the drumhoop E, and is slotted to receive the thumbscrew F, which enters the plate G, which latter is fastened by screws or equivalent devices to the hoop E. The wires D are arranged at an inclined angle with the extension of the plate A, so that they will press on the head H of the drum. This pressure may be increased by sliding the extension of the plate downward. In operation these elastic wires constantly press on the drum-head and subserve the same purpose as the snares ordinarily used. This snare may be quickly removed and replaced by unscrewing the thumb-screw F.
I do not intend to confine my invention to the exactconstruction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings, as the clamping device for the wires may be changed, a different arrangement may be substituted for attaching it to the drum, and other minor matters of detail maybe used without departing from my invention, which I claim to be- 1. An improved snare for d rums, consisting of a clamp arranged to be attached to the drum, provided with elastic wires arranged to press on the drum-head, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a clamp containing spring-wires arranged to press on the drum-head,of a plate connected with the drum, and means, as a screw, for uniting said clamp and plate, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a drum-hoop, of d a clamp detachably connected therewith bearing elastic wires which project over and press against the dru ni-head, substantially as shown and described.
l. The combination, with the plates A, B, and G, of the wires D, and thumb-screw F, all c011- structed and arranged substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
In testimony thatI claim the above Ihereunto set my hand.
HENRY THEOPHEL.
In presence of O. E. HUMPHREY, O. P. HUMPHREY.
