DRUM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,068, dated August 16, 1898.

Application filed March 1 9 l 8 9 8.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD P. ZEIDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My inventionrelates to improvements in drums; and the object of the invention is to provide a drum in which I am enabled to have either an orchestra-drum or a band-drum at pleasure by merely making some slight and convenient adjustment of the parts to convert the drum from one character to another, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved drum. Fig. 2 is a central cross-sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the deadeningbridge.

It will be observed in Fig. 2 that there are three distinct and separate heads A, B, and O, which are always present in the drum, and all may be used at one time, or the head A may be used with either of the others at a time, as may be desired.

The combinations for a banddrum are heads A and O, in which case the snares b for head B are relaxed by means of the snare straining and releasing mechanism 1), hereinafter more fully described, and the snares c tightened. The combinations for a snaredrum distinctly are the heads A and B, with the snares l) tightened and the snares 0 relaxed and relieved, also as hereinafter more fully described. For other purposes and to obtain a sound distinctly peculiar to a threeheaded drum of this kind I tighten all the heads and snares at the same time and use them all together, and there is as a result of this construction a distinct and novel sound given forth that cannot be obtained by a twoheaded drum and that may be said to be of a quality intermediate of the orchestra and band drums. This drum, therefore, is always complete and only complete when all the heads and parts are brought together and available for use substantially as herein shown and de Serial No. 674,473. scribed, and it is distinctly and essentially a three-headed drum, in which there is a central or intermediate head preferably midway between the two outer headsA and O and having a place of service in conjunction with said outer heads or with the head A alone, as may be wanted.

Now returning to the snare straining or tightening mechanism it will be seen that the snares b have tightening-screws b, and which engage a threaded clamp 12 that fastens the ends of the snares b, and by rotating the said screw in one direction the snares are tightened and in the opposite direction they are released, and there may be more or less tension given to the snares as they may need, or they may be so relaxed as to be thrown practically out of use for the time, as occurs when the head B is not used, as hereinbefore described. The snares c are fastened by screws 0 and, cross-clamps 0 similar substantially to the screws and clamps Z) and b and in like manner serve to tighten or release the snares c. In this latter case, however, when the lower head 0 is not being used the snares c are released and the sound-deadening bridge 0 of india-rubber or other material, is interposed between the snares and the head G, preferably at opposite sides of the drum, so as to entirely relieve the snares from the drum-head and take them out of sounding connections.

A series of clamping-screws D, connecting the outer heads, are shown in Fig. 1, said screws engaging clamps d at their outer extremities and a central threaded T-shaped post at, into the arms of which both the screws:D are adj ustablyengaged. The heads or outer extremities of the said screws D are constructed to be engaged to turn by a wrench, and by tightening or releasing these screws the several heads A, B, and C are tightened or released. It will be observed also that the rim E of the upper drum'-section between heads A and B is provided with a few airholes, relatively a, while the lower rim Fbetween heads B and O is more numerously perforated with holes f.

IVhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A drum provided with three several heads, two of which are outer heads and one an intermediate head, and snares for the in termediate and lower heads, substantially as described.

2. The drum having three separate heads and the middle head provided with snares, substantially as described.

3. A drum having three heads and snares for the middle and lower heads and separate means to tighten and release said snares whereby an orchestra or a band drum may be made, substantially as described.

4. Adrum constructed in two sections horizontally permanently secured together and having a head between the two sections provided with snares and upper and lower heads, substantially as described.

5. A drum having three heads, snares for the middle and lower head and means interposed between the lower head and its snares to deaden the sound of said head, and means to tighten the snares of the middle head, substantially as described.
