MAGIC WATCH-CASE- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatemi; No. 275,251, dated April 3, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD A. MUCKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city ot' Rockford, in the county ot Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vatches,ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly tothe casesinclosingthemovement; hutespeciallyto that class of watch-cases known as the i magie case.7
The object otl my invention is to improve the magic watch-case to render it. capable oi' a complete mechanical construction, by which a dcsirable article may be produced at a moderate cost adapted to incase hoth stem and key winding watches; and itconsistsin supporting the inner or movement-containing case to revolve ou pivot-al centers; in providing a pusher to perform the several functions, as t'ollows: as a pivot en which the inner or movement-containing case revolves; as a pusher to disengage the case-holding spring; as the key in a stemwinding watch, and as a key to rotate the inner or movement-containing case in key-winding watches.

In the figures, A represents the central rim portion ot' the outer case ot' the watch. This rim is ofthe usual form, and is provided with a pendant, a, securely fixed thereto and projecting outward.
At b is represented the pendan t-ring, having its end portions pivoted in the pendant a.
At B is represented the metallic 'hack ot' the outer case, which, when the case is employed as a hunting-cased watch, is the portion therefof which covers the crystal-case employed to protect the dial-face of the watch. This portion of the case is hinged to the central rim, A, at a point opposite the pendant.
At c is represented a spring lined inthe center rim ot' Athe case, having its free end engage the hinged case at or near the point ot' its hinged connection with the center riin in such a manner that its spring action will tend to open the case.
At d is represented the detent-spring, fixed in the center rim ot' the case, having its tree dctent end adapted to engage the free edge ot' the case when closed at or near the pendant.
At U is represented an open-rim case, hinged to the center rim, A, at the side thereol' opposite the pendant, and it is iitted to engage the rabheted edge ot' the central rim snugly, producing a close-fitting ljoint. This rim-case is designed to close snugly over the crystal-corered face of the watch when employed as an open-faced watch, and over the haci: casing ot' the innerl or inovemeut-containing case when employed as a hunting-cased watch.
At c is represented a pivot-supporting plate suitably iixed in the inner edge ot' the center rim ot' this outer case at a point exactly opposite the pendant. This plate is provided with a central opening to receive a pivot-stint pro jecting outward from the central rim ot' the inner case.
At lv is represented the central rim ol' the inner case, having its edges rabbeted to receive side cases.
Ati is represented a metallic hack, which fitted to engage one of the rabheted edges oi' the central case snugly, producing a close-titting dust and water tight joint.
At k is represented a rim-case fitted to receive a crystalplate, I, in a manner to produce a dust and water tightjoint. This rim-case in this instance has a. hinge-joint connection with the center rim, and is titted to engage the rahbeted edge thereoil in a manner to produce a `joint-connection prooi' against the admission ol" dust or water. This case is designed te contain the watch-movement with its dial-face under the crystal-case, and this case is of proper dimensions to enter within the center rim of the outer case, and its center rim is provided on one side with a pivot-stud, in, titted to enter the opening in the pivot-supporting plate c. The pendant of the outer case is provided with a suitable a-Xial opening; and the IOO IOS

At E is represented the outer head end ot' the pusher, which is ot' spherical outline, having a stem portion, n, tted to enter the outer enlarged portion ot' the axial opening` in the pendant, and the head portion is provided with an'annular groove, n', to receive the outer end portion ot' the pendant. This stem portion 'n is provided with an annular groove, o, which receives the inner enti portion ot' a screw, p, passed through the wall ot' the pendant. The construction and arrangement ot' annular groove o and screw p are such as to permit of a limited endwise moveuientot' the pusher.
At Ir is represented a shaft-like portion, which, in this instance, has a screw-connection with the head portion of the pusher. 'lhis central portion, r, ol' this shalt is fitted to slide cndwise in the inner portion ol the pendant, and the portion i" ot' its inner end is reduced to pass through the detent-spring, forming a shoulder to engage the outer surlace thereof in such a manner that an inward pressure on the head ot' the pusher will Alorce the l'ree end oi' the detent-spring inward and disengagc it l'rom the metallic back B, permitting itto be thrown open by the action ot" the ease-spring c. rEhe inner end ot' this reduced portion i" ot' the shaft is passed through the central rim portion ofthe inner case, and serves as one of the pivots on which the inner case is mounted, and, in connection with the pivot-stud m, supports the inner case in a manner to permit it to be turned on its pivotal supports within the outer case to present the crystal-covered diali'ace to either side ot' the outer case, prod ucing a movement-containing oase mounted on pivotal supports within the outer case and capable ol" use either as an open-face or huntingcased watch. rllhe portion r of this shaft, extending within the inner case, is produced in this instance rectangular in section, adapted lo engage the winding mechanism ot'the watch,
producing` a stem-Winder. This connection ot' the shai't with the winding mechanism is such that when it is used as a pusher it will slide endwise without interfering with the movement or winding mechanism.
From the lforegoing it will be seen that in my improvements the pusher serves the purpose ot'a pusher to disengage the detent-spring to permit the metallic back oi' the case to open,
as a pivotsupport to the inner case, on which it may be turned to change the watch from an open-face to a hunting-cased watch, or vice versa,and as a key to the stem-whirling meehanism to wind the watch.
At s is represented a packing, which may be oi' any suitable material-such as leather, t'elt'-, cork, or other material adapted to the purpose-and which is employed to surround the stem of the pusher inside ot the inner case, 'and is held in position by means et' a suitable plate, s', fixed to the inner walls ot the inner ease. This packing serves to exclude dust and to prevent even water from entering the case at this point, and, in connection with the closetting case, enables me to produce a dust and water proot' watch-oase.
In the application ot' my improvements to key-windiuT watches I produce the inner end, t, otV4 the pusher in rectangular form in section, and provide the inner case with a hole of like form to receive it, which furnishes the means b v which the inner case can he turned wit-hin the outer case by rotating the head ot' the pusher.
l am aware that a watch-case known as the magic watch-case7 has been produced prior to my invention, and that such case consisted ot' an outer case, composed oli' a center rinisase, a closed metallic hack, and a metallic ring-case hinged to opposite sides oi' the central rim-case, and that said case was provided with a case-spring', and with a spring-detcnt to engage the metallic back, and that said case contained an inner movemcnt-containing case capable of being turned within the outer case, to he used as a hunting-cased watch o1 as an open-t'aced watch. These therefore, as suoli, I do not claim; but

The combination, with the pendant, the spring-detour, and the movement-containing case, of a pusher capable ot' a limited axial movement in the pendant, said pusher adapted to depress the dctent-spring, and having a pivotal connection with the movement-containing case, and thc inner end adapted to cngage the winding mechanism ot' a movement contained within the case, substantially as and .i'or the purpose set l'orth.
