Description

aieni @Mira VSIMON INGERSOIIL'OF BROOKLYN, NEW -YORK.
Letters Patent No. 99,199, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPROVED FRICTION-CL'UTCH.
l The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent andmaking part of the same.
To all whom tt may concer-n.-
Be itknown that I, SIMON INGnRsoLL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction-Clutches; and I do hereby declare that the folment of a cam, and lever, constructed, arranged, and
operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter described.
To enable. others skilled ,in the art to which my invention appeltans, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents the stock or handle, provided with a cap or plate, b, at its upper end, said cap being formed with a groove or opening on its upper surface', as seen at a in iig. 2.
B represents the cam, consisting of a metal ring, formed with tooth e, on its inner circumference, and with projections fj, on its outer circumference, to rest upon the cap b, for the diameter is not more than onehalf that of the cap b. I
D is a. metal projecting plate, cast solid with the ring of the cam, and provided with two curved projections g g', on its upper surface. arcs of different circles.
The outer project-ion, g, when the cam is in place, ts against the outer circumference of the cap b, as seen in fig. 1, and the inner projection, g', into the groove, seen at a in fig. 2, and the screw-end of the handle passes through the cent-re of the ring of the cam. l
E is the lever, formed with a circular end and projection, e, to rest upon the ring of the cam.
The lever E has a hole through the circular end to receive thesscrew-end of the handle, and is also formed, at the same end, with'two projections, p 11, which form arcs ofthe same circle.
The tooth c, ou the cam, fits into the outer space, a, left between the two projer'ztions.
M is a spring, one eudof which is inserted into the circular end of the lever, and the other end passed over a pin, n, secured to the cam.
The cam and lever are then inserted upon the cap b, the screw-end of the handle passing through the centre of each, and are retained in place by means of the nut p.
.Having thus described my invention,
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure` by Let`- ters Patent, is
The cam B, constructed as described, in combina- These projections are tion with the lever E and cap or plate b, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing asmy own, I aix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON INGERSOLL.
