Description

UNITED STATES GEORGE JONES, OF PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ELIZA OF SAME PLACE.
JONEs,
.IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-KNOBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 103,749, dat-ed May 31, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J oNEs, of Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Knobs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the -art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvementin knobs for doors; audit consists in an exterior open-work metallichemispherical outer end and an interior hemisphere or plate of other form of metal orv'other material, l and in making the bulb or knob of two hollow hemispherical parts, each having an annular recess, into which is fitted a metal band, as and for the purpose hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the end or/outer portion of the knob. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. lon the line x.
Similar .let/ters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This knob is made in two parts, attached to the neck by a central screw, the screw heir-.g used in accordance with an improvement in door-knobs, for which Letters Patent have already been granted me.
A is the outer hemisphere or portion of the knob. This is made of cast metal, with openings B or openings of any other form or design through it, as seen in Fig. l.
Gis the inner portion of the knob, through which the neck or shank D of the knob passes,
and where the shank is conned by the screw E, as before stated. Corresponding with the form and diameter ofthe inner surface of the portion A is a hexnisp'herical-shaped piece, F, the outer surface of which may be polished, plated, or colored, so that when seen through the orifices or openings B the knob willpresent an ornamental appearance.
Gr is a metallic band which occupies a recess formed in the outer edge or rim of the knob, as seen in Fig. 2. This ring or band may be plated, polished, or colored in any manner, and its outer surface may be milled, serrated, Or fluted, if desired.
The parts of the knob, as well as the piece F, are held in place by means of lips and small recesses, as seen at H.
for the piece F, nor Ito any particular material. Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The sections A C, each having an annular recess at their point ofjunction, combined With metal band G,iitting said recesses, as and for the purpose described.
2. A knob having a series of apertures, B, in the outer casing, A, combined with an ornamental plate, F,of corresponding shape within, as and for the purpose described. i
The above specification ot' my invention signed by me this 3d day of March, 1870.
. GEORGE JONES.
Witnesses:
GEO. W. MABEE, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
- I do not confine myselfto any particular formas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-
