MATTHEW M. ADAM AT-rozmzy United States Patent 3,393,423 DECORATIVE MODULAR PULL ASSEMBLY HAVING MODULAR INTERIOR PART Matthew M. Adams, Arcadia, Califl, assiguor, by mesne assignments, to Travis Plating Co., Inc., a corporation of California Filed Oct. 24, 1965, Ser. No. 504,420 1 Claim. (Cl. 16-125) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A decorative modular pull assembly having a removable decorative insert member.
The present invention relates generally to decorative hardware; more particularly, the invention relates to a decorative modular pull assembly for drawers, cabinets and the like.
Drawers, cabinet doors, and other closure devices which are opened and closed, or otherwise moved, are generally equipped with handles by which the closures may be moved between open and closed positions. These handles are commonly referred to in the trade as pulls. In some cases, such pulls are designed primarily from the standpoint of functional utility. In other cases, the pulls are designed primarily from the standpoint of aesthetic beauty. However, the prior art pulls tend to be deficient for the reason that these pulls tend to be either aesthetically unpleasing in appearance or impractical. Moreover, most if not all of the existing pulls are incapable of being changed in appearance to match or complement a particular room decor or personal taste.
It is a general object of this invention to provide an improved decorative modular pull assembly for the purpose described which possesses optimum functional utility and particularly unique aesthetic beauty.
An important object of the invention is to provide a decorative modular pull assembly of the character described whose appearance may be varied to match or complement a particular room decor or satisfy a particular personal taste.
A further object of the invention is to provide a decorative modular pull assembly of the character described which is relatively simple in construction, economical to manufacture, easy to install and vary in appearance, and otherwise ideally suited to its intended purposes.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will become apparent to those versed in the art from a consideration of the following description, the appended claims, and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is an exploded perspective view of a modular pull assembly according to the invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the pull assembly installed on a closure;
FIGURE 3 is a front edge view of the pull assembly;
FIGURE 4 is a section taken on line 44 in FIG- URE 2;
FIGURE 5 is a section taken on line 55 in FIG- URE 2; and
FIGURE 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 in FIG- URE 2.
The modular pull assembly 10 illustrated in these drawings comprises an inner mounting or base part 12, an outer decorative facing part 14, and an intervening insert member 16. The inner base part 12 comprises a pair of spaced mounting bosses 18 integrally joined by an intervening arcuate grip portion 20. The mounting bosses 18 may be generally circular in transverse cross section and terminate at their rear ends in coplanar mounting faces 22. The grip section 20 arches away from the common plane of the mounting faces 22 in the region between the mounting bosses 18.
Recessed into the convex front face of the grip section 20 of the pull 10 is a generally rectangular pocket 24. The bottom Wall of this pocket may have a convexed curvature matching the convexed curvature of the front face of the grip section. Both the facing part 14 and the insert member 60 seat in the pocket 24.
The facing part 14 of the pull 10 is arched and longitudinally tapered in such a way that the ends of the facing part are substantially flush with the front face of the grip section 20 while the intervening portion of the facing part projects forward beyond the front face of the grip section. As shown best in FIGURES 1 and 3, the front edge or face of the facing part 14 has a filigree design which defines a number of ornate openings 26 which open through the wall of the facing part and expose the front convex face 28 of the insert member 16. If desired, the side walls of the facing part 14 may have arcuate notches 30 which open through the rear edges of these walls and expose the side faces 32 of the insert member 16. In this regard, attention is directed to FIG- URE 4, wherein it will be observed that the facing part 14 is generally channel shaped in transverse cross section and defines a rearwardly opening channel or groove for receiving the insert member 16. The insert member is dimensioned to fit closely within this channel or groove, whereby the front and side faces 28 and 32 of the insert member seat against the inner surfaces of the filigreed front wall and the notched side walls, respectively, of the facing part 14.
Extending axially through the mounting bosses 18 on the rear mounting part 12 of the pull 10 are bores 34. The forward ends of these bores are counterbored at 36 to receive rearwardly extending bosses 38 on the ends of the facing part 14. These latter bosses are centrally bored and internally threaded to receive combination assembly and mounting bolts 40.
In use, the pull is installed on a closure 42, which may be the front wall of a drawer, a cabinet door, or the like, by drilling holes 44 through the closure in line with the bores 34 in the mounting bosses 18 of the pull. The combination assembly and mounting bolts 40 are then inserted through the drilled holes 44 in the closure and the bores 34 in the mounting bosses 18 and are threaded, at their forward ends, in the bosses 38 on the front facing part 14. The bolts 40 are axially dimensioned so that these bolts may be tightened sufficiently to firmly join the parts 12 and 14 of the pull to one another and to the closure 42.
According to the invention, the exposed faces 28 and 32 of the insert member 16 may be painted or otherwise treated to provide the surfaces with a distinctive color and/or finish which blends, harmonizes, or contrasts, as desired, with the color and/or finish of the remaining components of the pull and the closure, or furniture, on which the pull is installed. In this Way, the pull may be provided with a particularly unique and aesthetically pleasing appearance which complements the decor of the room in which the pull is located. The insert member 16 may be fabricated from metal, wood, plastic, or other appropriate material in accordance with the desired background appearance and/or color to be furnished by the insert member. A wooden insert member, for example, may be particularly desirable in those cases where the pull is installed on a closure having a natural wood finish. It is apparent, of course, that the insert member 16 may be omitted, if desired, to provide the pull with an open, airy appearance.
Those versed in the art will appreciate that the present 3 4- invention achieves the objects and realizes the advantages said facing part having rearwardly extending, internalhereinbefore mentioned. ly bored and threaded bosses at its ends,
