Be. itlcnown that I, JAMES H. MATEER, acitizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat- Iin Protectors, of whiclrthe following is a specification.

This invention 'relates to guards or pro# tcctors for womens hat pins,`and the object of the invention is to provide a device of' this class which is of an extremely simple.

construction, which provides means whereby ornamental plates or pieces may be inten changeably connected thereto, and Ywhich will be effectively retained upon the projecting point of a pin.

iVith the above, and other objects in view,

which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts, here` inafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, there has been illustrated a simple 'and preferred embodiment of the improvement, but it is to be understood that the showin therein is merely illustrative and that minor details' to a hat pin; Fig. 2 is a pers ective view of the guard detached; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view -of the same.

W'oinens hat .pins as now constructed have their pointed ends projecting beyond the sides of the hat and thus become a menace on crowded thoroughfares, and the pins are also rendered dangerous when removed from the head of the wearer, such as in dressing rooms or theaters. It is the primary object of the 'present invention to overcome this danger and in order to ac-` complish this, I have provided a simple and effective hat pin guard. which is designated by the numeral 4l. The 'hat pin guard 1 comprises a hase ring '2. This base ring has its under face provided with an annular `flange Il, and its inner perimeter provided with a depression 4. The annular depression 4 is adapted forthe reception of an annul'ar reduced portion 5 provided upon an ornamental disk 6. The disk 6 may be suitably ornamented or maybear the initials of Athe owner of the guard. The ring 2 has its hinner face provided with a plurality of spaced teeth or fingers 7, and the'same are adapted to be bent inwardly so as 'to retain a securing plate 8 upon the offset portion 3 of the ring and to further retain the disk 6 upon the ring 3.

The numeral 9 designates the guide for A the guard. This guide 9 has its lower portionprovided. with an annular groove 10l and the securing plate 8 is centrally provided with an opening having an annular depression 11, the walls. of which being adapted to snugly engage said groove 10.'

The 'guide 9 flares outwardly from its bead to its opened mouth- 12, and positioned within the guide is a pin receiving element 13. .The element 13 is constructed of some soft, pliable material, such as rubber or the like, so as to provide for the ready insertionof the pinpoint 14, and'which, at the-same time, tightly engages the said point 14 to prevent the accidental removal of the guard. From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that all of the elements comprising the guard are readily removable, so that the merchant, with a device of this class, can easily and quickly insert a disk provided with the desired monogram or ornament upon the ring 2.- It will be further notedthat by constructing the guide 9 as a hollow member which flares in opposite directions from its center, the pin retaining element 13 cannot Work loose or become disengaged from within the said guide.
