COLLAR-BUTTON GUARD.
Application filed October 23, 1926. Serial No. 143,562.
The main object of this invention is to provide a plate for mounting of a collar button so that the collar button will exert a pressure upon the flesh of the neck over the greater area and thereby distribute this pressure, preventing the collar button from being embedded in the flesh of the neck, as is usual when designs of this type are not worn. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a collar button guard with a pocket for the retention of the base of the collar button, which pocket is formed on the guard in such position where it will be most convenient for wear.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevational View of the collar button guard.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional elevational view thru the middle of the collar button guard, showing a collar button inserted in place therein.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 with the collar button removed from place.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates an elliptical piece of celluloid which forms the front of the collar button guard. This front piece 10 is joined to a second similarly shaped back piece 11. This back piece 11 is also of celluloid and is secured to the front 10 by cement or the like. A portion of the adjacent surfaces of members 10 and 11 are free of each other and provide a slit 12 thru which the base 13 of a collar button is inserted into a pocket 14 w iich is formed bet-ween the front 10 and back 11. This pocket is provided by deforming or deflecting an annular portion 15 of the front plate 10 outwardly as illustrated in Figure 3. A slot 16 communicates with the upper edge 17 of the front plate 10, and at its lower end is formed into a circular extremity 18 thru which a curved ridge 20 is formed in the back plate 11 by depressing a portion of said back plate inwardly and into the confines of the pocket 14, as illustrated in Figure 3. This ridge is made slightly flexible and fits frictionally into the socket of.

The device is adapted to be worn inside the shirt band lying directly upon the neck at the front of a shirt. The base 13 of the collar button is slipped into the slit 12 formed between the front and rear plates 10 and 11. respectively, and is urged downwardly in said slit until it is contained within the annular pocket 14. As the rim of the base of said collar button enters into said pocket, it begins to slide upon the curved surface of the ridge 20, which latter urges said base outwardly toward the front plate 10 and frictionally retains this plate in the pocket 14 thru a slightresilient pressure exerted by the celluloid material of which the ridge and back plate 11 are formed. The head 21 and shank 19 of the collar button are then inserted thru successive button holes of the neck band and the collar and cravat are then mounted in place in the manner which is well known.
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made with out departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
lVe claim 1. A collar button guard comprising a back plate and a front plate cemented together, a slit formed between said plates intermediate their length, a slot extending downwardly in the front plate in the region of said slit, an annular deformed portion on said front plate extending outwardly forming an annular pocket between the front and back plates, said back plate being depressed into said annular portion to form a curved ridge for releasably engaging the base of the collar button.
2. A collar button guard comprising a back plate and a front plate cemented together, a slit formed between said plates intermediate their length, a slot extending downwardly in the front plate in the region of said slit, an annular deformed portion on said front plate extending outwardly forming an annular pocket between the front and back plates, and means projecting into said pocket for releasablj retaining the base of said collar button in said pocket, said means being adapted to project into the hollow central portion of the base of the collar button.
