Description
dilated gatuite -WILLIAM .IOIIN BODA, or DAYTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 98,465, dated January 4, 1870.
IMPRO'V'ED EXTENSION-TABLE.
The Schedule referred. to\n these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHN BODA, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables., anddo hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the upper side of my improved table, and,
Figure 2 is a sidev elevation of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refr"to'like.parts in each of the figures. l
My invention relates to a class of extension-tables iu which the lazy-tongs device isv employed forconnectiug together the sections; and l It consists iu the employment of certain dowel-piu supports furthe adjustable leaves, and in the general construction and arrangement of the various parts of the device.
In the annexed drawing- A represents the sections of the table, each of which is provided with a semicircular top, B, and is supported by'rneansl of t-wo legs C.
When closed together, three dowel-pns, l), projecting horizontally outward from the inner or straight edge of the top of one section, it into corresponding openings in the top of the opposite section, and hold them firmly in place, so as to form a circular table.
Connected at its ends to the sections A, is a lazytongs device, forniedof short bars D, pivoted together at the centre and ends of each, so as to permit of-the extension or closing together of the same, as may be desired. l
A supporting-leg, E, directly beneath the centre of the lazy-tongs, and suitable loose boards or leaves, ibr inserting between the sections, complete the extension-table, which, however, has oneserious defect,
in that said loose or movable boards are not firmly` supported when the table is extended to its full length.
The above-named defect arises from the arrangement of the bars D and D', one-half of which, D', are placed above the others, D, so vthat when extended, lines drawn across, or at a right angle with the line of extension, would in many places touch but one end of one bar, so that the edge of one of the leaves resting upon such lines would' be unsupported at one side.
To remedy this difliculty, a piu, F, is secured within and projects upward from the lower bars D, midway between their ends and cent-re, and coming lush with the upper surface of the upper bars D', furnish au intermediate support for the loose leaves.
Suitahe seinicircular notches (Z are provided within the .contiguous edges of thebars D', which,\vl 1en said bars are closed together, receive the pinsF. v v
As thus constructed, it is believed that this table possesses all the requisites of strength, durability, and
simplicity, and that it can befurnished at a smaller costthan extension-tables having au equal capacity,
-but constructed iu a dierent manner.
l Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Pat-ent, isr- The within-describedtable, consisting of the sections A, connected together and made adjustable Yto or from each other by means of the bars D and D', pi'voted at their ends and cent-re and provided with thev pins F, and notches d, substantially as and for the pur pose shown. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoiug,I have hereunto set my hand, this 17 th day of November, 1869.'
WILLIAM JOHN BODA.
