PETER BELODEAU AND LOUIS TRUDEAU, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATTACHMENT FOR WASHBOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24:, 1911.
Application filed. May 28, 1910. Serial No. 563,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER BELODEAU and LOUlS Tnconan, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, county of Berkshire, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for WVashboilers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a central, vertical, longitudinal section of a wash-boiler provided with our improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective on a larger scale, showing one end of the boiler with the shaft-supporting bracket mounted thereupon. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the bracket detached.
The principal object of the invention is to facilitate the use in connection with an ordinary wash-boiler, of a clothes-containing basket and a Windlass for raising and lowering the basket.
Referring to the drawing wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, represents an ordinary wash-boiler having at opposite ends offset handles, 2; and, 3, an openwork basket adapted to be lowered into the boiler and raised therefrom by cords, l, attached to the Windlass-shaft, 5, which shaft is rotatively mounted in hearings in the upper ends of a pair of brackets, 6, and adapted to be rotated by means of a crankhandle 7.
The bearings for the shaft, 5, are preferably formed by open slots, 8, in the upper ends of the respective brackets, 6, so that the shaft can be readily inserted in and removed from said bearings.
The principal feature of the invention relates to the manner of removably mounting the brackets, 6, upon the boiler. Each of said brackets is preferably formed of heavy resilient sheet-metal, and bifurcated at the lower end forming a slit, 9, adapted to receive the offset end of one of the handles, 2, of the boiler, as shown in Fig. 2. On one side of said slit, 9, the bracket has a depending leg, 10, adapted to bear upon the outer side of the end of the boiler. On the inner side of said slit, 9, said bracket has a leg, 11, the end of which is turned upward to make a U-shaped bend, the U-shaped leg thus formed being adapted to fit tightly between the body of the wash-boiler and the grip of the handle, 2, and to frictionally engage both to retain the bracket in position. The brackets can be thus applied by forcing each down over an end-wall of one of the handles to the limit permitted by the slit 9.
The bracket neighboring handle, 7, has mounted thereupon a wire hook, 12, adapted to engage the crank-arm of the handle and prevent backward rotation of the same, and of the shaft, 5, thus serving to support the raised basket to facilitate filling and emptying the same.
lVe have shown the brackets, 6, made of sheet-metal, but they may be made of any desired material.
WVe are aware that detachable brackets have been used in connection with washboilers either to rest loosely upon the top edge of the boiler or to fit a specially designed socket on the side of the boiler, and Eve make no claim broadly to such construc- It is characteristic of our invention that the bracket can be applied to an ordinary boiler with a sheet-metal loop-handle, which, when occupying the slit in the bracket, steadies the bracket in one direction, while the flat outer leg and the U- shaped inner leg wedged between the handle and the body of the boiler steady the bracket in another direction at right angles.
thereto.
lVhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1. The combination with the body of a wash-boiler; and an offsetting sheet-metal handle thereon; of a shaft-supporting bracket provided in its upper end with a shaft-bearing, and having at its other end a pair of legs, with a slit there-between adapted to receive the offset end of said handle and of a width corresponding to the thickness of said sheet metal, one of said legs being adapted to bear upon the body of the boiler outside of said handle, and the other being bent to U-form and adapted to wedge tightly between the body of the boiler and the grip of said handle.
2. The combination with the body of a wash-boiler; and a pair of offsetting sheet the crankmetal handles thereon; of a pair of shaft supporting brackets each provided in its upper end With a shaft-bearing, and having at its other end a pair oflegs, With a slit there-between adapted to receive the offset end of one of said handles and of a Width corresponding to the thickness of said sheet metal, one of said legs being adapted to bear upon the body of the boiler outside of said handle, and the other being bentto U-forni and adapted to Wedge tightly between the body of the boiler and the grip of said handle; a Windlass-shaft rotatively mounted in said bearings in the upper ends of said brackets; an openwork basket adapted 15 to be raised and lowered Within said boiler; cords connecting said basket With said Windlass-shaft; a crank-handle on said shaft; and a hook mounted upon one of said brackets and movable into and out of engagement with said crank-handle.
In testimony whereof, We have hereunto set our hands this 24th day of May, 1910. PETER BELODEAU. LOUIS TRUDEAU.
