Description

PATENTED NOV. 8, 1904.
T. L. FERRALL. k HANDLE FOR WASHBOILBRS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 17,1904
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented November 8, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS L. FERRALL, OF ROME, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROME MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
HANDLE FOR WASHBOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,720, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed February 17, 1904. Serial No. 194,010. (No modelfi T0 ml] whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THouAs L. FERRALL, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles. for Washboil ers, &c'.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a handle for receptacles and general utensils, but particularly adapted. for washboilers, which while adapted to fold is provided with means for holding it in projecting position when in use and when folded is held out of contact with the side wall of the boiler.
The features of the invention are the construction andarrangement of the parts whereby the object above stated with other minor purposes and results are attained.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a washboiler having my improved construction of handles applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed view, partially in section, showing the handle in position for use. Fig. 4is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 and shows the han dle from the side in its open or in-use position. Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of the ear or fixed part by means of which the handle and movable parts are secured to the boiler or other receptacle. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the handle-loop stripped of all other parts.
Referring to the reference figures in a more particulardescription, 1 represents a washboiler or other suitable receptacle to which my handles are applied. The handle consists of a loop 2, formed into the shape shown in Fig. 6 particularly and from small size round rod preferably. On the bar portion 2 thereof there may be provided a wooden and ornamental handle 3, which increases the size and is adapted to receive the hand. The bar portion 2 of the loop is supported on outwardly-curved ends or extension portions 2 of the loop, as more particularly seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The inner side of the loop "provides hinge or pivotal parts 2 2, which are received in the eyes or sleeves 4 4 of the ear or fixed part 4. On the extreme end-s of the rod which forms the loop 2- are provided inwardly-standing projections 2 2, which occupy positions very close to each other. The ear or fixed part 4 is formed, preferably, of a folded sheet of thin material and form ing, as before stated, the sleeve portions 4, and intermediate of these sleeve portions is a reversely-turned stop portion 4".
The ear or fixed portion 4 is adapted to be secured to the wall of receptacle or the boiler preferably immediately under the beaded edge thereof, so that the reversely-turned stop portion of 4 shall partially surround the head 1. The part 4 is preferably secured withrivets, although the part 4 may be additionally secured by solder, if desired, to form a more complete and tasty construction.
The projections 2 when the handle is in its raised position are adapted to engage with the stop portion 4, thereby limiting the upward turn or movement of the handle at a point preferably as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. -The stop 4 serves to give a more substantial bearing for the projections 2 to come in engagement with and protects the walls of the receptacle and the beaded edge from injury and distributes the resistance partially to the ear or fixed part 4.
By reason of the outward curve form of the arms 2' of the handle-loop, the handle, and particularly the enlarged portion, the rolled portion 3 thereof can never strike the body of the receptacle and the fingers of the hand can be readily inserted within the space to turn the handle to its open position. In addition to that the arms 2 are arranged, preferably, to strike the outer ends of the ear or fixed piece 4 and not come at any time in contact with the wall proper of the boiler or other receptacle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a handle for washboil- IQ projecting stop ends 2 on the inner ends of the pintle arranged to engage the piece 4", substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two Witnesses, this 9th day of February, 1904.
THOMAS L. FERRALL.
