Be it known that I, JAcoB SoHArrnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to handles for receptacles particularly of the kind made of sheet metal, such astin or copper. The invention is more especially adapted for the handles of wash boilers, and the object is to provide means whereby the handle may be held in an extended position so that it may and so that it will not be excessively heated by contact with the wall of the receptacle, such means being of a character whereby, when desired, the handle may be folded downward against the face 0 the receptacle wall and thus be unobtrusive. The invention incidentally affords a reinforcement for the mounting of the handle.

The handle indicated by a and the ear indicated by b are of ordinary construction, the former having an axial portion a which is inclosed within the tubular portion 6 of the ear, said tubular portion being formed by folding the sheet metal ear and impartmg the tubular shape along the line of the fold. When the two end portions of the ear are thus brought face to face and are riveted to the wall of the receptacle, the handle which is inclosed within the ear is permitted enable either through h t r e y r of to swingoutward so as to be grasped in the hand or to drop into a vertical position. When the receptacle isin use and its contents highly heated, the handle which ordinarily rests against the wall of the receptacle be comes too hot to be touched and it is therefore desirable to provide means for holding it a horizontal .or distended the other hand, when the receptacle is not in use, it is more desirable that the handle should be folded down out of the way. To the handle to be placed and held in of these positions, I provide a manually operated latch. This consists of a lever, shown in F ig. 7 as consisting of a straight portion 0 and another portion 0 extending at right angles from the upper end of the part c. This latch is associated with-the ear Z) by means of a face plate f provided with a vertical half round groove or passage 7" on its inner face in which the straight portion 0 of the latch fits and is adapted to tnrn. The face plate conforms in outline to the ear band is placed against the outer face of said ear and is held thereto by means ofthesame rivetsg which hold the ear. Hour of these rivets are shown passsheet metal and the wall of the receptacle. plate 7 thereby not only serves as a support and hinge for the latch, but reinforces the ,ear and prenents the tabular portion 6 thereof from opening and allowing the handle to rattle therein. When the face plate is thus secured to the ear, the portion 0' of the latch lies directly under the tubular portion 6' and parallel thereto. The bearing groove for the latch is located to one side of the central vertical line of the ear so that when the latch is swung to the left, as shown in Fig. l, the extremity of the part 0 will stand in the path of the handle a when it swings on its axis, while when the latch is turned in the opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 3, its end does not project into the path of the handle. In order to render the manipulation of the latch easy and also bring its engaging portion into proper position to support the handle, the portion 0 is provided with a bend a which is easily grasped in the fingers when the latch is in the position, Fig. 3, this bend serving also when the latch is in the position, Fig. 4:, to

When the handle is in its folded position, the latch is in the position of Fig. 3. This is the condition when the boiler is out of use. W hen the boiler is in use and it is desired'to preve'nt heating the handle and to hold it in position to be easily grasped, the handle is first brought up to the horizontal position, then the latch is turned through an arc of approximately 180, thus bringing the extremity of the part c underneath one of the side arms of the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, where it supports the handle in a horizontal position out of contact with the wall of'the receptacle.

Obviously a latch or its equivalent may be arranged in various other ways in connection with the handle to accomplish the same purpose and I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific structure illustrated other than as set forth in the claims.

I claim: 7 r

1. The combination of a receptacle, an open pivoted handle for the receptacle, a pivoted latch having its axis of rotation at an angle to the axis of rotation of the handle, adapted to hold said handle in a distended position and so located with respect to sai handle that when the handle, is in undistended position it surrounds said latch. 2. The'combination of a receptacle, a handle pivoted thereto on a horizontal axis and a support for positively anchoring said handle in an elevated position, comprising a two-armed lever, one arm of which is pivoted on a vertical axis and the other Copies 0! this patent adapted to swing into and out of supporting relation to the handle.

3. The combination of a receptacle, a handle pivoted thereto on an elongated horizontal axis and a support for positively anchoring said handle in an elevated position, comprising a two-armed lever, one arm of which is pivoted on a vertical axis between the extremities and to one side of the middle point of the axis of the handle and the other arm adapted to swing in one direction to assume a position to support the handle and to swing in the other direction to assume a position to permit the handle to lower.

4. The combination with a receptacle, of a handle pivoted to said receptacle and a support pivoted to said receptacle for positively anchoring said handle in an elevated position out of contact with said receptacle, the axes of said handle and support being disposed at right angles to one another and adjacent to and in alinement with the wall of said receptacle to permit said handle and support to be folded against said receptacle. 1 5. The combination with a receptacle, of a handle pivoted to said receptacle and a support for positively anchoring said handle in an elevated position out of contact with said receptacle, said support comprising an arm pivotally mounted on an axis disposed adjacent to and in alinement with the wall of said receptacle and adapted to be swung in one direction against said receptacle into non-supporting position and to be swung in the other direction against said receptacle into handle supporting position.
