Shade-Rollers and Brackets Therefor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a,
full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to shade rollers and brackets therefor.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal, vertical, sectional view through the device; Fig. 2 is a detail of a modified form of supporting'means; Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the bracket used in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4t is the same of the bracket used in Fig. 2.
The main objects of the invention are to produce a shade roller of cheap but durable and efficient construction; which can be easily operated; can be quickly and easily hung or unhung; and the various parts of which are contained entirely within the roller, thus protecting them from dust, grit, etc.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the tube 1 is provided at each end with a plug 2 securely fixed therein. A centrally located rod 8 extends the full length of the tube and passes through suitable bores on the plugs The ends of rod 3 are squared in cross section, as at 4t and fit into square sockets in thick metal disks 5. Disks 5 are securely riveted to the arms 6 of brackets 7 which are provided at their tops with downwardly presented teeth 7* and at their bottoms with inwardly presented teeth 7*, by means of which the brackets are secured to the window casing 7, as shown in Figs. 3 and 1.
A collar 8 is placed over each end of the tube 1 and has its outer edge bent down over disk 5 and its inner port-ion secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

tube, as shown in Fig. 1. By this means, rod 3 is held secured against rotation, while tube 1v is easily rotated, the collars 8 and disks 5 forming smooth bearings to facilitate such rotation.
The usual coil spring 9 is provided around rod 3 for half of its length. The outer end of the spring is secured to rod 3 and the inner end is secured to a disk 10 which is secured in the tube and centrally bored to permit rotation of the tube. In order to enable the roller to accommodate unusually long shades, the length of spring 9 should be increased. This may be done by shifting the position of disk 10, as will be obvious. This provides a simple and easy means for providing a spring which will accommodate shades of unusual length, which is not possible with any of the forms of rollers now in use. To prevent longitudinal movement of rod 3, disks 8* are secured thereon at each end thereof and bearing against the inner faces of plugs 2.
To secure the roller in any desired position it is provided at one end with a small longitudinally grooved collar 11 mounted on the squared portion 4 of rod 3 and adapted to be engaged by pawls 12 mounted on plate 13 secured to the outer face of plug 2, in the usual way.
In the roller supporting means shown in Fig. 2, the disk 5 instead of being riveted to the arm 6 of bracket 7 is provided with two diametrically opposite integral lugs 14: which pass through perforations 15 in the arm 16 of bracket 17. Bracket 17 is provided with upper and lower downwardly and inwardly presented teeth 17 and 17", respectively, corresponding to the teeth 7 and 7 of bracket 7 and adapted to secure the bracket to the window casing 17.
The bracket 17 shown in Figs. 2 and 4c is provided with an L extension 18 integral with arm 16 and at right angles thereto, and extending outwardly therefrom. The outwardly extending arm 19 of the L member is bent at right angles a short distance from its end. A sheet metal strip is bent around this outwardly bent portion and riveted thereto so as to form two vertical parallel strips 20 which are outwardly curved at their upper ends to form a semicircular rack 21 adapted to receive the end of a curtain rod so as to support a curtain in front of the shade, if desired.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any Way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such Within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a fixed rod, means for preventing rotation thereof, a tube rotatably mounted on such means and inclosing the rod, a disk secured in the tube, a coil spring mounted around the rod having one end secured thereto and the other end secured to the disk, supporting means for the means for preventing rotation of the rod, and means for securing the tube in adjustment.
2. In a device of the character described,
a tube, a rod centrally located therein and s extending the full length thereof, a centrally bored dlsk secured in the tube, a coil spring having one end secured to the rod and the other end secured to the disk, disks at each end of the tube adapted to receive the ends of the rod so as to prevent rotation thereof and to form bearings for the rotation of the tube, supporting means secured thereto, and means for securing the tube in rotatable adjustment.
In a device of the character described: a tube; a rod centrally located therein and extending the full length thereof; a centrally bored disk secured in the tube; a coil spring having its inner end secured to the disk and its outer end secured to the rod; disks mounted at each end of the tube and adapted to receive the ends of the rod so as to prevent rotation thereof; collars secured, to the ends of the tube and bent downwardly over the said disks so as to form bearings for the rotation of the tube; supporting brackets fixedly secured to the said disks; and means for securing the tube in rotatable adjustment.
