MILK-PAIL PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,831, dated May 3, 1904.

Be it known that we, Ina FLEMING and ROY G. FLEMING, citizens of the United States, residing at Storm Lake, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk- Iail Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of our invention are to provide a device which can be easily attached to or detached from the ordinary milk-pail, which will keep dirt and other foreign substances away from the milk-pail when it is placed upon the ground, as is customary in milking.

A further object is to provide a device whereby the milk-pail, which has a rim extended around its bottom portion, can be slipped into the inside of this protector and be maintained in that position until it is removed by the drawing out of engagement with the rim of one of the springs which is in engagement with this rim, and thus allow the pail to be easily removed.

A further object is to provide clamps which are to be used in connection with a milk-pail which does not have a rim upon its lower portion and which can be easily and readily adjusted relative to the sides of the protector and to the sides of the lower portion of the milk-pail.

Our invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in our claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows in perspective the device attached to the ordinary milk-pail. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the protector, showing the arrangement of the clamps and one of the springs which are used for maintaining the protector in position relative to the milkpail; and Fig. 3 shows in perspective the complete protector detached from the milk-pail.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, we have used the reference-numeral to indicate the bottom of the protector, which is preferably made of tin or other metallic substance. Extending upwardly and flaring out- SerialNo.167,134. (No model.)

wardly from the bottom 10 is the circular rim 11, forming the sides of the protector. Attached to the outside of the rim 11 and extending upwardly and over the rim and into the interior of it to a point a slight distance above the bottom 10 are the leaf-springs 12, 13, and 1%, so that as the pail, which has a rim attached to it, is inserted into it in the inside of the protector the springs 12, 13, and M will engage the sides of the pail, and the lower ends of these springs will engage the rim and firmly hold the protector to the milkpail.

lVe have provided a handle 15, which extends through the rim 11 of the protector and to the inner lower end of the spring 12, so that as the operator pulls outwardly on the handle 15 the lower inner end of the spring 12 will be thrown out of engagement with the rim of the pail which it engages and against the inner side of the rim 11, so that the operator can easily remove the pail from the protector and place another pail on its interior.

Extending through the sides and near the upper portion of the rim 11 are the thumbscrews 16, having the metal plates 17 rotatably mounted thereon. These thumb-screws are placed diametrically opposite each other in the rim of the protector, so that as they are screwed inwardly the plates 17 will engage the pail, which is inserted into the protector, and the pail will be maintained in the position relative to it. \Vhen it is desired to remove the pail, one of the thumb-screws '16 is unscrewed slightly and the pail can be removed. The great advantage with this device is that it can be hung up in the stable and can be used constantly with but very little care being taken of it, and by the use of it the bottom of the milkpails will be kept clean and free from dirt, hich is especially desirable where the pails are carried into the house and set on tables or in similar places where it is desirable to have the bottom of the pails perfectly clean. It will be readily seen that even though there is no rim on the bottom of the milk-pail the springs 12, 13, and 1 1 will maintain the pail in position in the protector, and the clamps 16 can be more easily placed in position on acl count of these springs whether they serve the function of absolutely holding the protector to the pail or not.

Having thus described our invention, What We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is

1. The combination of a bottom, having a flaring rim attached to and extending upwardly from it, springs attached to said rim and extending into the interior of it and means for releasing one of said springs, substantially as and for the purposes stated.

2. The combination of a bottom, having a flaring rim attached to and extending upwardly from it, springs attached to said rim and extending into the interior of it, and clamps for maintaining the rim in position relative to the bottom of the milk-pail, substantially as and for the purposes stated.

3. The combination of a bottom, having a flaring rim attached to and extending up- Wardly from it, springs attached to said rim and extending into the interior of it and means for releasing one of said springs and clamps for maintaining the rim in position relative to the bottom of the milk-pail, substantially as and for the purposes stated.

4. The combination with a milk-pail, of a protector, springs attached to the sides of said protector and on the interior of it, designed to engage the lower portion of the milk-pail, means for releasing one of the springs from engagement With the sides of said pail to alloW the pail to be moved from the protector, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
