To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. KEPLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to strainers.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive strainer the straining medium of which when it becomes worn or damaged may be easily removed and replaced with a new one or exchanged for a finer or coarser one, thus adapting one strainer body to a multiplicity of strainer mediums.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved strainer, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.

Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the strainer-body, which in outline may be of any desired shape, but which in the present case is shown as circular. The body is tapered from its upper to its lower end.

2 denotes the straining medium, which in the present instance consists of a disk of wirecloth soldered or otherwise connected to a ring or band 3, which has a taper corresponding to the taper of the body portion and is provided at its lower edge with ductile tongues 42. The diameter of the ring or band is less than that of the body portion of the strainer except at the extreme lower end of the body portion, where the diameter thereof is less than that of the ring or band. This permits of the band being inserted from the top into the body portion and snugly fitting into the body portion near its lower end, so as to prevent the escape between the surfaces of the band and the body portion of the material being filtered, and also prevents the ring or band from slipping downwardly out of the lower end of the body portion. After the band has been thus placed in the body poi tion the ductile tongues are bent upward against the outer side of the body portion of the strainer, as shown in the accompanying drawings, thus securely holding the band and its strainer-disk in position.

If it be desired to replace the strainer-disk with one having a different mesh or for any other purpose, all that is necessary is to bend the tongues down, and thus elevate the strainer-disk and its collar through the body portion of the strainer.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation. The device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed and may be placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be socured by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

The combination with a strainer consisting of a body portion open at both ends, ofa ring located on the inside of the body portion near its lower end and having a taper corresponding to the taper of the body portion and of greater diameter than the lower end of the body portion, said ring being provided with a filtering medium and with ductile tongues, the latter being adapted to be bent upwardly against the sides of the body portion and re- 'movably hold the ring and filtering medium in position, substantially as set forth.
