Description

(No Model.)
J. F. Md-MILLIN.
MILK PAIL. No. 370,639. Patented Sept. 2'7, 1887'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OSEPHUS F. MOMILLIN, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILK- PAIL.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,639, dated September 27, 1887.
Application filed J nly 28, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPHUS F. MOMILLIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania-,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Pails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in milk-pails, the object being to provide the same with a strainer for removing impurities from the milk; also to provide a compartment'for the reception of filtering agents.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying'drawings, which illustrate my invention Figure 1 is a perspective view of a milk-pail having my improvements attached thereto, and Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section.
A refers to the body portion of the pail, which is of ordinary construction and provided with the usual attachments, such as a handle, a, and bail a for tilting the same.
To the upper edge of the pail A, and extending about half-way around the same, is soldered or otherwise attached a guard or breastplate, B, which inclines upwardly from the edge of the pail, the inner edge being finished by turning the metal upon itself, as shown at b. At its center this plate is provided with an opening, b, of a desired size, over which is secured a piece of wire-gauze for the purpose of straining.
0 refers to a semicircular strip, which is suitably attached around the edge of the pail, said strip extending a slight distance in rear of the breast-plate B and above the same. This vertical strip is of a desired width at its rear ends and tapers toward its middle or front portion of the pail, and above the same is rigidly attached a second breast-plate, D. The upper breast-plate, D, is of the same configuration as the plate B, and is provided on its outer edge with a flange, d, which overlaps the strip 0 and is soldered thereto, its inner Serial No. 245,523. (No model.)
edge being bent upon itself to present a smooth finish. Centrally this plate is also provided with a strainer, 11, of about the same size as the one formed in the lower breast-plate.
Above the opening or strainer d is attached an annular discharge-spout,E, and, if desired, this spout may be provided with a ring, G, to hold in place a straining-cloth, F, or its equivalent.
By constructing the breast-plates as hereinbefore described a compartment will be provided between the same, within which filtering material may be placed, and by providing the strip 0 with ends wider than the middle portion the compartment is made wedgeshaped, so that the filtering material placed therein may be easily removed. Another advantage of having double breast-plates is, if in pouring too fast milk should flow over the breast-plate B it will enter the compartment and run out through the spout.
I claim.
1. In combination with a pail having a breast with a strainer attached thereto, a second breast attached above the first breast, so as to provide a compartment between the same, the upper portion of said compartment being open, and a strainer attached to the upper breast, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a milk-pail, of the breast-plates B and D, secured to the upper edge thereof, so as to extend partially around the same, and provided with strainers b and d, the upper breast having attached thereto an annular discharge-spout, ring, and strainer, the parts being organized so that an open space is provided at the upper end of said breasts, so as to receive the overflow, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a pail, A, of ordinary construction, the breast-plates B and D, connected to each other by a semicircular strip, 0, the rear ends of said strip being wider than the middle portion, so as to provide a wedge-shaped compartment, the annular discharge-spout, E, ring G, and strainer F, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPHUS F. MOMILLIN.
