To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S.v HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamar, in the county of Prowers and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Device for Obviating the Generation of the following is a speciication.

4This invention belongs to the art of smoking pipes, and it particularly pertains to a new and useful device for eliminating the possibility of the saliva from the smokers In other of nicotinin the pipe stem.

The invention aims t'o vprovide means to obtain theabove result, comprising a valve Casing adapted to be located within the mouth pieceof the pipe stem and in one end of which avalve is arranged. This valve is provided with the usual valve stem, the end of which is provided with threads to receive an adjustable member. Between this adjustable member and a shoulder within the casing, and encircling the said valve stem,.is a spring, the tendency of which is to hold the valve seated. When the smoker hdraws upon his pipe, he causes a vacuum between the mouth of the mouth piece and the said valve, which 'causes the valve to become unseated. When this action occurs, the spring between the adjustable member andthe shoulder is contracted. When the smoker ceases to draw upon his pipe, the vacuum is relieved and the valve closes,

ythereby preventing the generation of icotin. In the drawings, however, there is only disclosed one particular form of the invention, but in practical fields this form may require certain alterations, to which the applicant is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended by the appended claims.

Other features and combination of parts will be hereinafter more fully set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.

Fig. 3 is an end View of the device, illust-rating the fact that the adjustable member is provided with flat faces, thereby permitting the smoke to be drawn through the stem.

Referring to the drawings, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed l designates the bowl of the usual form of smoking pipe, which is provided with the usual stem 2 and the mouth piece 3.

As indicated in Fig. l, as at a, 'a device 4 is provided for eliminating the possibility of the generation of nicotin in the pipe stem. This device is curved outwardly at the end which is arranged .at the extreme portion of the mouth piece, asindicated at 5, in order to prevent the device from being pushed too far inwardly of the mouth piece. This device 4 com-prises the tubular member having a valve seat 7 between which and'the cylindrical bore 8 a smallerl bore 9 is arranged. By the smaller bore 9 a shoulder l0 is formed, between which and an adjustable member 11, which is threaded upon the valve stem or rod 12, a spring i3 is interposed. By the action of this spring, the valve 14 is held normally in a closed or .seated position, and by a drawing effect a vacuum is `created between thc valve and the interior of the smoker-s mouth. which will cause the valve to become unseated.

The adjustable member 1l is approximately and continually inclosed by the tubular member, but in order to permit smoke to pass the` adjustable member when the valve 14 is unseated or opened, fiat surfaces 15 are formed or provided upon the adjust! able member. It will be observed that by these flat surfaces 15 the smoke is permitted to pass the adjustable member, regardless of the position of the member.

The invention having been is claimed as new and useful is :l

1. A device as set forth, comprising a tubular member having an interior shoulder portion and provided with a normally seated valve, said valve including a stem or rod, having a member threaded upon one end, a spring interposed between said member and the shoulder for holding the valve normally seated, said threaded member being arranged set forth, what within the tubular member and constituting means for adjusting the action ofsaid'spring,

said threaded member having fiat surfaces lto .be drawn through vupon either Side the Stem when the valve is open.
