ELAM A. GROSS, OF CAMDEN, NEV JERSEY.
TOBACCO-Pues.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,935, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed January 29, 1889. Serial No. 297,979. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELAM A. GRoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in pipes; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of parts, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a pipe embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 'is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the pipe with the sections of the stem detached.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the bowl, which is provided with a l stub-stem, B, having the inwardly-proj ectin g extension b, provided with an exterior male screwthread, and the shoulder b ,adjacent to the bowl.
C designates the stem, which tapers gradually from its outer to its inner end, and is formed in two sections, c and c', which are fitted together, and the remote and larger end of the outer section, c, is fitted to the stubstem on the bowl. The outer end of the said outer section, c, is provided with a cavity, S, adapted to receive the large end of a cigar, whereby the complete stem, when detached from the bowl, may be used as a cigar-holder; and the inner end of this cavityS has a conical nicotine-chamber, s, communicating at its apex with the central longitudinal bore, O, of the stem. The cavity S is interiorly threaded with a female screw-thread, and is adapted to be screwed on the threaded portion Z) of the stub-stem until it bears against the shoulder b. The inner end of the said section c is provided with a male threaded portion, D, and a shoulder, d, at the outer end of the threaded portion. The outer end of the inner section, c, is provided with a cavity, S',
adapted to receive a cigarette, whereby this portion of the stem when detached may be used as a cigarette-holder, and the inner end of the cavity S has a conical nicotine-chamber,'s, communicating at its apex with the central longitudinal bore, O, of the stem, the same as does the chamber s, above described. The cavity S is interiorly threaded with a female screw-thread, whereby it is adapted to screw on the threaded extremity D of the outer section until it bears against the shoulder d.
The stem of the pipe is tapered from the bowl to the extremity, thereby causing the outer end of the inner section to be much smaller than the corresponding end of the outer section, so that when detached the inner section may be used for a cigaretteholder, and when the inner and outer sections are connected they form a cigar-holder, all as will be clearly understood.
The stem may be of any preferred shape, either curved or straight, and may be of any suitable material, a mouth-piece or'tip being attached to its inner end in the usual manner.
The device is simple, may be cheaply manufactured, and, as the stem is formed in sections, it may be readily cleaned.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- The bowl A and stub-stem B, the latter having a reduced inner male-threaded end, b, forming the shoulder' b', in combination with the stem C, tapering gradually from its outer to its inner end, and having the longitudinal central bore, O, said stem comprising an outer section, c, having a comparatively large cavity, S, in its outer end, for the purpose set forth, an internal screw-thread therein adapted to iit the thread on the reduced portion b of the stub-stem B, and a conical nicotine-chamber, s, in rear of said cavity, its apex communicating with said central bore, O, said section also having a reduced and externa-lly-screw-threaded extension, I), at its inner end, and an inner section, c', having a comparatively small cavity, S', in its outer end, for the purpose set forth, an internal screw-thread therein adapted to lit the thread on the reduced extension D of the stem-section c, and a conical nicotine-chamber, s', in rear of said cavity, its apex communicating with said central bore, O, said inner section having a mouth-piece at its inner end, the whole arranged and adapted as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELAM A. GROSS.
