Description

-(N o Model.)
A. AKESON. TOBACCO PIPE.
No. 595,801. Patented Dec. 21, 1897.
WITNESSES: lI/l/ENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDERS AKESON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 595,801, dated December 21, 1897. Application filed February 12 1897- Seriel No. 623,039- (N0 model-J To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDERS AKESON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in pipes adapted for the use of tobacco-smokers, the object thereof being to supply an article of this character which is so constructed that the smoke therefrom will reach the mouth of the user in a cool condition, afurther object being to prevent fouling of the stem.
The device comprises few and simple parts which can be easily cleaned, and it is especially adapted for use in the open air by bicyclers and others to prevent dangerous scattering of the sparks.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the anneXed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pipe. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on a line y y, Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a bowl A has a hollow ring E attached to the outer surface thereof for supplying the annular compartment a, and upwardly-directed openings 0 lead from the interior of the bowl to the compartment a. Engaging with this said ring E and leading into the compartment ais a hollow plug F, which has a cylinder G secured upon the outer end thereof by means of a nut f, whereby the said cylinder may be rotated with relation to the bowl. This said cylinder is closed at its respective upper and lower end by means of heads g and g, the head g being hollow and having a tube G riveted thereto, to which the pipe-stem B is attached, whereby the smoke has free access from the interior of the bowl to the stem. In this construction I use a normally-closed lid a which is retained in a closed position by means of a spring-clip 4:, and which is au tomatically opened by means of a spring 5 when the spring-clip is released by a user of the pipe. Draft to the bowl is supplied in this instance by means of notches 6, cut through the edge of the lid A.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A pipe, comprising a bowl having an annular recess formed therein which communicates with the interior of the bowl by means of small inclined channels and a hollow plug leading into the said annular compartment,
said plug carrying at its outer end a swiveled stem, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a pipe, the combination of a bowl having an annular compartment formed therein, said compartment surrounding the body of the bowl and having inclined channels leading therefrom into said bowl, there being an opening in said compartment, a hollow plug'located in said opening carrying upon its outer end a swiveled cylinder to which the pipe-stem is connected, whereby the bowl may be maintained in a'horizontal or perpendicular position with relation to the stem, substantially as shown and described.-
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of February, 1897.
ANDERS AKESON.
