Description

C. .l. GRAHAM & J. A. FARRIS.
PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 14. l9l5.
Patented June 12, 1917.
m m J W i r M m J UNITED STATF@ PATENT @FBE.
CLARENCE J. GRAHAM AND JOSEPH A. FARRIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE J. GRA- HAM and Josnrn A. FARRIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an attachment, for smoking pipes, that will purify the smoke before the same passes from the bowl of the pipe to the stem thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a smoke purifying attachment, for smoking pipes, that can be associated with any style of pipes, can be cheaply manufactured, will be durable and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of our invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the bowl of a pipe, and through the attachment, and showing the manner of mounting the attachment within the pipe,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bowl of the pipe.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the letter A designates the bowl of a smoking pipe, and B the stem thereof. In this instance, the bottom wall of the bowl is provided with an internal annular flange C.
The smoke purifying attachment for the pipe consists of a cylindrical shaped receptacle 1, the lower end of which is received within the annular flange C, while the upper end of the receptacle is closed by means of a removable cap 2, the said cap 2 being provided, concentrically, with an opening 3, and is also provided eccentrically with an opening 4:. The diameter and the height of the cylindrical receptacle 1 are considerably less than the diameter and height of the bowl A, as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Removably fitted within the open end of the bowl A, is an inverted conical shaped auxiliary bowl 5, the said bowl having its larger end provided with an annular flange 6, which overlies the upper end of the walls-of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1917.
Serial No. 66,773.
the bowl A and serves to provide an airtight joint between the auxiliary bowl and the bowl A. The smaller or apex end of the bowl 5 has a passage 7 therein, which establishes communication between the interior of the auxiliary bowl 5 and the main bowl and is alined with the opening 3 in the cover 2 for the receptacle 1.
A conical shaped screen 8 is fitted within the auxiliary bowl 5 and is located at the smaller end of the bowl 5, and a vertical metallic tube 9 has one end extending through the passage 7 in the smaller end of the bowl 5, and its opposite end extending through the opening 3 in the cover 2 for the receptacle 1 and into the .reccptacle and is terminally spaced from the bottom wall of the receptacle 1, as shownin Fig. 1 of the drawmg. 1
An outlet pipe 10, which is of a length considerably less than the length of the tube 9, has one end fitted within the opening 4, in the cap 2, and extended within the receptacle, and the upper end of the pipe 10 is curved laterally, as shown at 11, and has the bore thereof located, approximately in line with the bore of the pipe stem B.
In use, the receptacle 1 is partly filled with water, or other purifying liquid, and placed within the bowl A of the pipe, as shown in Fig. 1, and one end of the tube 9 extended through the opening 3 in the cap or cover 2 for the receptacle 1, and the upper end of the tube is snugly received by the passages 7 in the smaller end of the auxiliary bowl 5. The auxiliary pipe 5 is then filled with tobacco, and a draft produced through the stem B, in the ordinary manner, so as to admit of the tobacco being lighted in the usual manner. By virtue of the draft created through the pipe stem B, the smoke will pass from the auxiliary bowl 5, downward through the tube 9 and into the receptacle 1, and then up through the water or other liquid in the receptacle 1 and out through the outlet pipe 10 to the interior of the bowl A, and then be conveyed through the bore of the pipe stem.
By virtue of the passage of the smoke through the water, or other liquid, the same will be purified and also cooled, before reaching the mouth of the smoker.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that we have provided a smoke purifying attachment that can be applied to any type of pipe and which will ell'ectively purify and cool the smoke before the same enters the mouth of the smoker; also an attachment that can be easily, and'conveniently removed from the pipe bowl and cleaned so as to be rendered sanitary and assure of the maximum purification of the smoke before the same enters the mouth of the smoker.
Having thus described our invention What we claim as new, is:
The combination with the bowl and the stem of a smoking pipe, of an auxiliary bowl fitted within the main bowl and having a passage in the lower end thereof, a liquid holding receptacle detachably positioned within the main bowl and underlying the auxiliary bowl, an inlet pipe having one end extending into the passage in the auxiliary bowl and having its opposite end extending into the receptacle and having the terminal of the last-mentioned end located adjacent the lower wall of the liquid holding receptacle, an outlet pipe located within the main bowl of the pipe and having one end communicating with the interior of the receptacle and its opposite end positioned in line with the bore of the pipe stem, and means carried by the lower wall of the main bowl of the pipe and engaging the liquid holding receptacle for holding the latter against movement.
In testimony whereof we al'fix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE J. GRAHAM. JOSEPH A. FAR-BIS.
