SMOKING-PIPE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR B. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specificationt My invention is a smoking-pipe specially constructed for cooling smoke, insuring deposit of nicotin therefrom, and for facilitating cleaning, when required. The construction of the same is as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the pipe: Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the several parts of the pipe disassociated Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on the line 3-3 Fig. 1: Fig. 4 is a central section of the bowl and the short chambered stein formed therewith. v y

The stem 1) is'detachably connected with the short bowl-stem a by means of a tapered tenon and socket as used in the construction of this class of pipes. It is provided with an enlarged lengthwise chamber 2, and a smoke passage 3 which is formed in the upper side and communicates with the chamber '1, its rear end extending nearlyto the rear end of the body of the stem. As shown best in Fig. 3, this smoke passage 3 is formed in the solid body of the stem 6.

The inner or supplemental stem 0 comprises a small body 4 which extends into the chamber of stem I) nearly to the front end of the same, and is provided with an en-' larged hub or base portion 5, which is screwthreaded at each end to adapt it forf'detachable connection with the stem 6, and the mouth-piece (Z. Intermediately of the threaded parts, the stem 0 is provided withan enlarged portionfi which is milled or roughened as shown in Fig. 2, for convenience in rotating it, for disengaging it from the con-. nected parts- -At its outer end, the bore of stem 0 is enlarged at the outer end and made funnel-shape, as indicated at 7 Fig. 1. The passage 8 inthe mouth-piece is also enlarged correspondingly and the two portions 7 and 8 meet on smooth'lines, and together form an enlargement of the bore or smoke passage which receives saliva and facilitates passage of the same along the bore 4 and into the chamber 2 of the stem proper b. The orifice 9 of the smoke-passage in the mouth-piece opens preferably on the upper side of the latter so that a less quantity of saliva enters the same than would be'the case with'any other arrangement of such opening. It will be apparentffrom the construction and arrangement of the two smoke-passages 3 and 4 provided-in the outer and inner stems b and c, that the smoke from the chamber 1 passes nearly to the rear end of the main stem 6 and must then return to the front end of the same in order to enter the inner stem 0 and thus pass to the mouthpiece. By this means, a comparatively long and circuitous passage is provided for the smoke so that it is cooled more than would be practicable if it had a direct passage, and the deposit of nicotin is also favored. The inner stem 0 may be readily detached from the main stem 1) by rotating it to the left and it may as easily detached from the mouthpiece. When the parts are thus separated, as indicated in Fig.2, it is comparatively easy to clean them or remove the saliva or nicotin which they contain.

What I claim is:

1. The improved smoking-pipe comprising a bowl having a socket, a main stem 7) fitted detachably in the latter and provided with a. large bore 2 extending inward from the outer end, and .a small smokerpassage 3 formed in the integral upper portion of the said stem and extending to a point near the outer end of the same, the supplemental bored stem 0 attached to the outer end of the 'main stem and extending nearly to the end of the larger ,bore in the latter, and a mouth-piece attachedto the outer -'end of such supplemental stem,"substantially as described.
