This invention relatesto a pipe filter, and it" aims-generally to provide a construction affording minimum opportunity for choking and which will serve to extract anyliquid matter from the smoke.

It is further aimed to provide a tobacco or smoking pipe having a novel lter attachable in the stern thereof and readily removable for cleaning and repair.

It is still further aimed to provide such a construction equipped with a knob having a plurality, usually four, air passages and a core to which said passages conduct the smoke from the bowl, and which core has various smoke passages and liquidextracting pits or wells. y

The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, I0 designates the bowl of a tobacco or equivalent pipe, having a hollow stem section II extending therefrom as usual, and the interior of which stem is in communication with the bowl. An inwardly extending flange I2 extends partly across the said passage at the junction of the bowl and stem. A detachable mouth piece I3 is alined with the stem and com municates with the bore thereof.

In accordance with my invention, a novel lter device to remove solid matter from the smoke, also to remove liquid matter from the smoke and marily consists of a tube I4 and a core I5 within the tube. Said passage 22 at the rear end communicates with an arcuate passage 25in turn communicating with the interior of the extension I1. Within said extension I1 a ball 26 is movably disposed, being retained by upsetting the end of the portion I 1 as at 21, with intervening spaces 28 remaining, so that the ball 26 cannot completely cut off the draft through the pipe, but will only prevent the passage of solid matter therethrough, that is, through the bore 29 of the mouth piece I3.

A knob 30 is carried at the forward end of the l tube I4 and it has a plurality, preferably four, longitudinally extending passages 3| through which the smoke is drawn from the bowl I0. The forward end of the knob 30 is generally spherical and the wall of flange I2 engaged therewith isr preferably similarly shaped as at 32. It will be noted that the knob 30 at the rear thereof has an enlargement 33 which is telescoped into the tube I4 and fastened therein by upsetting such tube as at 34.

As a result of the construction described the smoke must take a tortuouscourse through the various passages insuring a cooling thereof beforev reaching the mouth piece I3. Solid matter will be removed or precipitated and cannot pass the ball 26 and enter the mouth. the device will not become choked and any liquid matter will be deposited in the pits or wells 2| and hence not be `conducted through the mouth piece.

The mouth piece may be readily removed at desired times for cleaning and the core may be readily detached from the mouth piece, and from the tube. In addition, it will be noted that the tube has openings 35 in radial alinement with the wells or pits 2 I, so that when the mouth piece is detached, it may be inverted or shaken to enable the escape of collected matter from the wells.

Various changes may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention. For instance, as shown in Figures 8 and 9, the knob 30', identical with that at 30, is formed integral with the core I5', which is identical with that disclosed at I5, which integral part is associated with a tube I4 in the same manner as the knob 30 and core I5. If desired, a ball 26', functioning like that at 26, may be provided preferably slightly smaller in diameter than the bore of the extension I'I, which ball is held in place by a removable pin 3l, the removing of the pin permitting removal of the ball 26 as an aid to the cleaning of the adjacent part of the core when necessary.

I claim as my invention:-

1. A chokeless pipe having a bowl, a stem communicating therewith and leading therefrom, a mouth piece communicating with the stem, a tube within the bore of the stem and mouth piece connecting them together, a core within and removable with the tube, said core having a plurality of wells, a plurality of smoke passages communicating with the bowl, wells and mouth piece, passages exteriorly surrounding the core and communicating with vthe wells at the topl thereof, and a longitudinally extending passage intersecting all of the last-mentioned passages and terminating short of the front of the core.

2. A chokeless pipe having a bowl, a stem communicating therewith and leading therefrom, a mouth piece communicating with the stem, a tube within the bore of the stem and mouth piece connecting them together, a core within and removable with the tube, said core having a plurality of wells, a plurality of smoke passages communicating with the bowl, wells and mouth piece, said passages including a longitudinally extending passage communicating with the wells at the tops thereof and with the bore of the mouth piece, spiral passages exteriorly surrounding the core and intersecting the wells at the tops thereof, a longitudinally extending passage communicating with all of the last-mentioned passages and terminating short of the front of the core, an extension at the forward end of the core disposed in the mouth piece, an obstruction carried by said extension, knob means adjacent the for- Ward end of the tube having a plurality of longitudinally extending passages communicating with the bore of the tube, said knob having a part disposed in the tube, and said tube being upset to piece, said passages including a longitudinally exv tending passage communicating with the wells at the tops thereof and with the bore of the mouth piece, spiral passages exteriorly surrounding the core and intersecting the tops of the wells, v
