To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, ERNST W. ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to tobacco-pipes, and has for its object to provide simple, inexpensive, and efficient means for cooling the smoke in its passage from the smoke-orifice ofthe bowl to the mouthpiece and to prevent the access of moisture to the smoke-passage leading from the bowl, said means being of such construction as to adapt it for attachment to ordinary pipewstems having a stem-chamber of suitable dimensions.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in thefollowing description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a pipe provided with smoke-cooling and saliva-excluding means constructedin accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view ofthe cooling-tube, showing the saliva-deflector in section.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.

The bowl 1, which may be of any wellknown or preferred construction, is provided with the usual smoke-orifice 2, leading to a stem-socket 3, into which is threaded the reduced end 4 of a stem 5, having a cavity 6, into one endof which is fitted the mouthpiece 7, the cavity being reduced at the bowl end of the stem to form a tubular seat 8 in communication with the smoke-orifice of the bowl.

Removably fitted in the seat at the bowl end of the stem is a cooling-tube 9, which extends into the cavity of the stem, is preferably deflected upward at its extremity, and is provided with areturn-lip or saliva-deflector 10 of trunco-conical construction, of which the free edge is spaced from and encircles the adjacent portion of the tube. The intermediate portion of the tube between its seated end and its free end is coiled, as at 11, to increase the length of the smoke passage, and thus the cooling effect on the smoke, and the extent of this cooling eifect will be proportionate to the number of coils, which may be varied as desired. The upward and rearward deflection of the free end of the tube serves to prevent saliva which may collect in the cavity of the stem from reaching the outlet end of the tube, and should moisture accumulate on the intermediate portion of the tube or be communicated thereto from the bottom of the cavity, as when the bowl is held downward, the inclination of the pipe in the opposite direction, or with the bowl upward, will not result in the moisture reaching the outlet end of the tube and thence passing thereinto, for the reason that the conical deflecting-flange will obstruct the flow of the liquid and will cause it to drop'to the lower side of the cavity. The mouthpiece is preferably fitted detachably in the stem, and hence the tube may be unseated and withdrawn from the cavity for cleansing purposes.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A tobacco-pipe having its stem provided with a cavity, and a tube in communication with the tobacco-chamber of the pipe-bowl, extending into said cavity of the stem, and

'having its free end provided with a return lip constituting a saliva-deflector.

2. A tobacco-pipe having a bowl provided with a smoke -orifice and stem-socket, a stem removably fitted at one end in said socket, and having a reduced seat adjacent to the smoke-orifice, and an enlarged cavity in communication with said seat, a mouthpiece movably fitted in that end of the cavity which is remote from said seat, and a cooling-tube removably fitted in the seat, in communication with the smoke-orifice, having an intermediate coiled portion, and provided with a free extremity located within the cavity of the stem and provided with a truncoconical deflecting-lip.
