Description

F A STEGNER SMOKING PIPE AND CLEANER THEREFOR.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 5.1915.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
0-. WASHINGTON n c FREDERICK A. STEGNER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SMOKING-PIPE AND CLEANER- THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1%15.
Application filed April 5, 1915. Serial No. 18,094.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. Srns- KER, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and Useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes and Cleaners Therefor, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, attention being called to the drawing, which accompanies this application and forms a part thereof.
This invention concerns smoking pipes and relates more particularly to that type of pipes which is equipped with a cleaning device.
The invention consists of the particular construction of the cleaning device and of the pipe, and of the features whereby the two become adapted to co -act with each other, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, referred to in the description, Figure 1. shows a pipe of customary type in longitudinal section. Fig. 2. shows in side-view, partly in section, a pipe of another customary type.
In the drawin reference letter A designates the bowl of the pipe.
Letter B designates the smoke passage which extends from the bowl with which it communicates, to the nipple C where it terminates into the open. In the present case this smoke-passage consists of a bore contained in the stummel or stem D, and in a mouth-piece E attached thereto, each of these parts containing an axial bore which bores are endwise alined for communication. For the purpose of this invention however, it is immaterial in how many parts this bore or smoke-passage is contained, and stem and mouthpiece might constitute one continuous member. In Fig. 1, this member is shown of curved shapeand in Fig. 2 it is shown straight.
The cleaning device consists of a slender flexible rod F, preferably wire, provided at one end with a tapering plug G, the outer part of which forms also a manipulating knot for the rod. At its other end it carries the scraper H, approximately ball-shaped and of a diameter closely fitting bore B, but permitting it to pass through the same. This cleaning device occupies bore B of the pipe and extends also across the bottom of" bowl A and through the wall of the same, the latter being provided with an opening a for the purpose, which is opposite and in axial alinement with the inner portion of bore B. At its outer end, opening (1; is provided with a tapering seat for plug :G. For the purpose of cleaning the smoke-passage of accumulated or obstructing matter, scraper H is simply pulled through it by means of rod F, manipulated by plug Gr.
.Matter brought out by the cleaning device is removed therefrom in any suitable manner and the operation may be repeated until desired results are obtained. Interference with the draft through bore B, by scraper H is prevented by an enlarged portion a in said bore which portion is occupied by the scraper when in its normal position. Beyond the scraper there is an attaching de' vice like a hook or loop K, normally within the nipple so as not to be objectionable. hen it is projected out as shown in Fig. 2, it permits attachment to it of auxiliary cleaning means, for instance a tuft of cotton or a piece of soft string which, when pulled through the bore by the same manipulation described before, permits said bore to be more thoroughly cleaned out and wiped dry. To permit said loop to be thus projected out, the cleaning device as to length is rendered adjustable by means of a screw connection whereby plug G is attached. For such purpose said plug has a screw-threaded stem 9, seated in a correspondingly threaded ferrule f mounted upon rod F. By unscrewing plug G from the ferrule in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the length of the cleaning dem'ce is increased so as to permit loop K to be projected beyond nipple G and render it accessible for the purpose stated. Loop K may be formed by part of rod F which is bent back and inserted at its free end into the material of the scraper which is preferably metal. In all cases screw-connected plug G serves also to facilitate the withdrawal of the rod F for manipulation, that is, when partly screwed out, it permits a better grasp in case the device should stick.
Having described my invention, I claim as new:
1. In combination with a pipe having a bowl and a member extending therefrom which contains a smoke-passage, said bowl having also an opening in its wall opposite where the smoke-passage communicates therewith and alined with said passage, a cleaning device consisting of a rod adapted to occupy the smoke-passage and extending into the bowl, cleaning means at one end of said rod and a plug adjustably connected to its other end and seated in the opening of the bowl wall mentioned.
2. In combination with a pipe having a bowl and a member extending therefrom containing a smoke-passage which is enlarged at the nipple end of said member, there being also an opening in the wall of the bowl opposite where the smoke-passage enters the bowl which is in alinement with said passage, a cleaning device comprising a rod adapted to occupy the smoke-passage and extending into the bowl and having at one end scraping means adapted to'occupy a normal position within the enlarged portion of the smoke-passage, and at its other end an adjustably connected plug seated in the opening in the bowl wall mentioned.
3. In combination with a pipe having :1,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
bowl and a member extending therefrom which contains a smoke-passage, said bowl having also an opening in its wall opposite where the smoke-passage communicates therewith and alined with said passage, a cleaning device consisting of a rod adapted to occupy the smoke-passage and extending into the bowl, cleaning means at one end of said rod, screw-threaded ferrule at the other end of said'rod, a tapering plug fitted to seat in the opening in the bowl wall mentioned and a screw-threaded stem on said plug fitted to the ferrule.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
V FREDERICK A. STEGNER.
