1, Claim. 1

This invention relates to loosening and, thrusting detritus from the. passage oi smokers.- pipes. This invention has utility when incorporated as an accessory for a bowlestem and mouth-piece type of a smokers pipe, wherein a scraper for the passage from the bowl may thrust detritus clear of the, mouthpiece.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. 1 is. a side elevation, with parts broken away, of a tobacco smokers pipe, having the accessory of the invention incorporated therewith;

Fig- 2 is an enlarged view, in section, of the bowl region. of a. smokers pipe, with the accessory operating head disconnected, and clear of the bowl. and the accessory scraper not shown;

Fig. 3 is a detail view, insection, of a mouthpiece for a pipe, approximating the scale of Fig. 2, and with the scraper partially broken away but connected for actuation by the rod to thrust detritus for its discharge at the mouth piece port;

From a pipe bowl I, there is shown a projecting portion 2 having an interfitting connection 3 with a stem extension 4 to a mouthpiece 5. The bowl I has a chamber 6 to receive a charge of tobacco to be smoked. A base portion I from the bowl I has a draft passage 8 thru the portions 2, 4, and the mouth-piece 5 to a port 9. In alignment with the passage 8 as remote from the port 9, there is a sleeve I0 thru the wall of the bowl I to the bottom of the chamber 6. Intermediate its length, the sleeve or seating means I51 has an internally threaded portion I I in which is positioned a bushing I2. There is thus pro- 2 vided in the sleeve III. on the, side, of the bushing I2 awayfrom the chamber 6', a chamber I3.

Ahead I4: of: a. cleaner actuator is mounted on a. slender rod or wire. I5. Centrally thru the bushing I2 is an. opening IB' providing a guideway for the rod: I5. Upon seating the head I4 in the chamber I3, the rod I5 from the. head I4 extends thru; the passage 8 into proximity of the port: 9; The, end ofthe rod I5 remote from the. head I4 has an enlargement seat or connector portion. II, herein shown as having an externally threaded region. The portion H has a tapering prong portion 21 for clearing debris.

A key portion I8 on the head I4 coacts with a complementary seat portion I9 at the top of the chamber I3. With the head I4 seated in the chamber I3, finger nail notches 20 are accessible for the pipe user to withdrawthehead from its seat, wherein itis approximately flush with the pipe bowl exterior.

A cylinder member 2| (Figs. 3, 5, 6) has a scraper end 22 and remote therefrom, an internal seat or threaded portion 23 complementary to the threaded region seat or connector portion N. This assembly provides a detachable connection.

The scraper cylinder 2I is positionable in the region of the bottom of the pipe bowl chamber 6. With the seat I1 disconnected from the scraper cylinder 2I, the rod I5 may protrude from the cylinder 2! and extend along the passage 8. The disconnection of the cylinder 2| is brought about by bringing the projecting means 25 which are at the rear end of the cylinder 2I into engagement with complementary seats 26, forming radially extending notches in the bushing I2 (Figs. 2, '7). The key head I4 from the rod I5 is a guide for the operator in turning the rod I5 to bring the

25, 26, into register, but also for checking the limit for withdrawal of the rod I5. Now by turning the rod I5, there may be disconnection between the portions I1, 23, to leave the cylinder 2| lodged in the sleeve I0 while the rod may be moved along the passage 8 toward the mouthpiece 9. In this movement of the portions I1 and 21 from the cylinder 2|, such detritus as fragment 28 that may be there lodged or be along the passage 8, may be spilled from the mouthpiece 9, if not shaken from the bowl chamber 5. The waste matter discharged from the moot--- piece is shown at 24 in Fig. 3.

When the pipe is used for smoking, the scraper cylinder 2|, 22 is in retracted position within the sleeve It; the projecting means 25 being engaged with the seats 26 of the bushing I2. The rod I5 is positioned in the passage 8 with the head I4 in the chamber l3, and the connector portion I1 in the mouthpiece, as seen in Figs. 1 and 11. The smoke would pass from the bowl, through the passage 8, past the portion 21 and out through the port 9.

For cleaning the pipe, the head I4 is withdrawn from the chamber [3, and the rod l5 retracted until the threaded connector portion l1 engages with the threaded portion 23 of the cylinder 2|, positioned in the sleeve l0. Portions I! and 23 are then screwed together. Then rod l5 with portion I1 is moved forwardly, carrying the scraper cylinder 2| thereon towards the mouthpiece as seen in Fig. 3. The scraper end 22 of the cylinder 2| thus cleans the passage 8 of debris.

After cleaning, the cylinder 2! is retracted and positioned within the sleeve ID, the projecting means 25 engaging with the seats 26 of the bushing l2 as stated above. The rod l5 with its threaded portion I7 is then unscrewed from the threaded portion 23 of the cylinder 2|, and the rod IS with its portion l1 'moved forwardly to position the portion I1 in the mouthpiece (Fig. 11) as stated above. During this movement, the prong portion 21 cleans the cylinder 2| and passage 8 of waste matter that may remain.

' Due to the fact that the general external contour may be retained for the pipe structure, the whims of various smokers may be taken care of thru the incorporation of the disclosure herein as an accessory or conversion means.

What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a smokers pipe comprising a bowl provided with an opening in the bottom thereof, a portion projecting from the bowl, a stem, and a mouthpiece having an endport, said projecting portion and stem having a smoke passage extending from the bowl to the mouth-piece port and of approximately constant diameter thruout, a pipe cleaner comprising a rod having a head at one end and a connector portion at the other end, said connector portion being spaced radially from the passage wall at all times, the opening in the bowl adapted to be closed by said head; a scraper movable within the smoke passage and having an opening thru which the rod extends, said scraper having a connector portion complementary to the connector portion of the rod; a sleeve having a bushing therein positioned in the bowl opening, said scraper adapted to be positioned either in said mouth-piece or sleeve, and coacting means between said scraper and bushing to prevent relative rotation between them to permit the connector portion of the rod to be connected to or disconnected from said scraper; said rod and scraper being operable by said head to thrust the scraper from the sleeve, past the bowl and thru the projecting'portion and stem to a flush position with the mouth-piece port for cleaning the smoke passage of debris; said scraper being,

positionable within said sleeve, and said connector portion of the rod being positionable in proximity to said mouth-piece when the pipe is being used for smoking.
