CIGAR on CIGARETTE HOLDER;
Application filed June 29, 1926. serial-no. 119,267.
This invention relates particularly to a cigar or cigarette holder from which the cigar or cigarette may be automatically ejected without grasping the same andwithout I the use of a tool or instrument.
One object of the invention. is to provide a cigar or cigarette holder of this character embodying a novel and improved construction whereby-a cigar or cigarette may be ejected gradually by an easy and convenient relative rotative'action of two parts grasped by the user to: avoid the cigar or cigarette being forcibly projected orshot? from the holder with a snap action, and wherein the II ejecting mechanism automatically returns to normal position upon release of one of said two parts. r Another object is to provide such' a holder having the parts thereofso constructed and arranged that 'theholder is neat in appear ance, has a smooth exterior surface and is no larger at any point than the usual non-ejecting or plain type of cigar .or cigarette holder. Further objects are to providea holderof the character described. Which is sanitary in 7 construction and wherein commingling or contact of smoke, the juices from the tobacco or saliva with the interior working parts of the ejecting mechanism, is prevented; to provide such a holder whichcan be easily and quickly'disassembled and cleaned by the user, and to, obtain other'resultsand advantages as may be brought out by the following des'cription.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding and like parts are designated throughout the several views by thesame reference characters, 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation'of a cigar or cigarette holder embodying the invention with the tip portion of the holder shown in longitudinal section;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the holder, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional View, taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,-

portion is formed with agroove "8 which re- Figure 6 is a perspective view' of the sleeve which is rotatably mountedupon the inner end of the stem portion;
Figure 7 is a transverse vertical sectional viegv,taken on the line 7-Z of Figure 2, an 7 i I i I Figure 8 is a perspective view of the'heh ically slotted plunger actuating cylinder.
Specifically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention,;the reference character 1 designates the stemportion of the holder which maybe formedof any suitable material such as amber orbakelite,
and is formed at one endywith a mouthpiece 2. The other end of the stem portion is reduced at 3 "and formed with a circumferential groove 4 at the junction of the reduced portion with the body of the stem. A sleeve 5 is rota-tablymounted .upon' the reduced portion?) of the stem and secured against longitudinal movement by a rib 6 fitted in the groove 4, said rib being formed in anysuitable manner asby spinning or pressing the material of the sleeve inwardly.
A tubular tip portion 7 which may be formed of any suitable material suchas hard rubber or bakelite, is adapted to be fitted upon the sleeve 5 so as to be longitudinally removable therefrom but rotate therewith. In, the present instance, the end of the tip ceives -a laterally projecting lu-g[9-on the i sleeve5. Within the sleeve 5 is rotatably mounted a hollow cylinder-10 having a hellcal slot 11, and withinsaid cylinder is coaXiall-y and longitudinally movably mounted a tubular plunger 12. This plunger has one end thereof enlarged as ,at 18' and provided with a laterally, projecting lug 14 fitted within the helical slot 11, and the other end of said plunger has swivelly connected thereto a head 15 rotatably and "longitudinally movable in a flanged tube :16 fitted in the I outerend of the tubular tip portion 7. The outer end of the sleeve 5 is interiorly threaded and the innerend of the flanged tube 16 is exteriorly threaded. to cooperate with said interior threads so that the flanged tube may be separably connected, as at 19, to the sleeve 5 withits flange 17 overlying the outer end of the tubular tip portion 7 With this construction, the tubular tip portion is 3 held against longitudinal movement oif the sleeve ,5. A compression spring 18 is interposed between the enlarged portion 13 of the plunger and the outer end of the'hollow cylinder, said spring normally tending to move, the plunger inwardly of the holder so as to cause abutting engagement of the.
enlarged end 13 thereof witlr'the end of the reduced portion 3 of the stem and to locate the head 15 inwardly of the. outer endof:
rotate with said sleeve and the tubular tipportion 7. A tube 22 is fitted withinthe hollowcylinder and formed at one end with a plurality of longitudinal projections or fingers 23 adapted to be arranged within longitudinal grooves or recesses 24: in the reduced portion 3 of the stem. Said grooves 24 openoutwardly through the end of said reduced end portion 8 sothat the tube 22 is longitudinally separable from the stem portion but is'caused to rotate with the stem portion. The tube 22'is provided with a lon itudinal slot 25 through which passes theQu'g 14 on the plunger 12;
With this construction, it will be obvious that a cigar or cigarette may be fitted within the flanged-tube 16 in a mannersimilar to that in which a'cigar or cigarette is fitted in anordinary cigar or cigarette holder. The smoke from the cigar or cigarette passes through the tubular plunger 12 intothe passage through the tubular'stem 1, the spring 18 normally holding the end 13 of the tubular plungerin tight abutting en- 'gagement with the reduced end 3 of the stem. When it is desired to eject the cigar or cigarette from the holder it is merely necessary to gripthe stem portion in one hand and the tip portion-7 inthe other hand, at'the same time causing relative rotation of said stem portion and said tip portion. The hollow cylinder 10 is thus rotated relatively to theplunger 12 so that the plunger is moved longitudinally outwardly and the head 15 pushes the cigar or cigarette from the flanged tube 16. This action is relatively slow and gradual so that the cigar or cigarette is not forcibly projected or shot fronr the holder. Either the tip portion or the stem portion is then released and the spring 18 automatically returns the parts including the plunger to their normal positions.
' It vwill be observed that the moisture from the tobacco and saliva. are prevented from commingling or contacting with any part of the ejecting mechanism ex cept the'interior of the tubular plunger- 12 and the head 15; Therefore, unsanitary accumulations in the holder are prevented. When it'is desired to clean the holder or to smoke,
make adjustments in the ejecting mechanism, it is merely necessary to unscrew the flanged tube 16 from the sleeve 5, whereupon the hollow cylinder lO with parts arranged therein are removed from the sleeve '5 and the tubular tip port-ion 7 may be longitudinallyslipped oif said sleeve. It will be noted that the tubular tip portion 7 is coaxial with the stem portion, and that the outer surface of the holder is smooth and uninterrupted, all parts of the ejecting mechanism being invisible fromv the exterior of the holder, and the oint between the tubular tip portion and the stem portion being the only break in the exterior surface of the holder.
Obviously, the details of construction of the holder may modified and changed by those skilled in the art without-departing from the spirit or scope of the invention,
and therefore I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself in the construction of the holder" except as required by the fol lowing claims when construed in the light-of the prior art.
