OF REX EORD; .YORK.
SM KINGrP-I E JENQ-.AE IAQHMENZ Application filed January 17, 1925. Serial no. 3,123
To all? to/tom it may con-corn:
Be known that I, Josnrrr I a citizen of the United States, residing at ReXi'ord', in the county of Saratoga I ject to provide a cleaning attachment where by the bowl of. the 'pipeinay at all times be cleaned.
Gne'fof the important objects of the present invention is to provide a cleaning attachment of the abeve mentioned'character, wherein the same includes an ejector, thesame "being normally disposed in the bottom of the bowl belowjtheusual smoke passage, the ejector beingadapted for reoip rocatory movement withi the bowl i 'or cleaning the latte whenever desired, the attachment being such construction as not to interfere with the use otthe smoking pipe.
A still turtherobjeet ofthe invention is to provide a cleaning attachment for SlDOking pipes oi the above mentioned character, wherein the attachment is carried by the pipe at all times, thus enabling lie bowl to be readily. and'ea'sily cleaned without the loss of any considerable length of time and labor. I i
A further objectis to provide a cleaning attachment tor smoking pipes of the above mentioned chara ter, which willat tin'ies be pos' 'ive and eilicien; in its operation, the same being further simple in con. t inexpensive, strong and d more adapt-ed the pur .is designated.
Other objects and advantages this in vention will becomeapparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specifi. .lon and in which lil'e numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a smoking pipe illustrating the finger piece for actuating the ejector, and s Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pipe, andthrough the cleaning attachment embodying my invention.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose A. BENNETT,
. of lillustration the preferred embo'diment ofmy invention, the numeral 1 designates generally asmokin pipe of any well 'lrnown construotio n thesame including 'the usual bowl 2, the stem 3, and the mouth piece 4,5 In the present instance, the bowl 2is provided with an annular shoulder 5 in'the interior of theQlower portion thereof at a point .bel'owthe opening 6" which conr munioates with the smoke passages 7 ofthe ste1n3 as is more clearly illustrated in Figure f the drawing. The purpose of this construction will hereinafter be more; fully described. 7 l/Iy improved cleaning attachment con1- prises an'ejector member 8 which is in. the form of asubstantially conoaved disc the same being of a diameter slightly less than the innerdiameter of the bowl 2. The ejector member Sis adapted for reciprocatory movement within the bowl. and normally the same rests onfthe annular shoul- ,der 5 so thatthe ejector member will not interfere with the usual passage of the smoke from thefbowl 2 through the open-- ing 6 into the smoke ge 7 of the stein 3; An upwardly curred tubular member 9 is arranged'in the lower portion of the bowl 2, the same having; one end thereof fitted in the sidelof the bowl at a point below the opening. 6. A bracing fe' .ntsueh as is shown at 10 extends upv ardly from the bottom of the. central portion of the bowl and cooperates with the upwei-dly extending portion dot the tubular member 9 in the nner more elearly'illustrated in Figure 2. The stem 3 is provided with a longitudinally extending opening 11 in the forward portion thereof below the smoke passage 7, the forward endof the opening 111mmmunicating with the adjacent end of the tubular member 9. The opposite end of the longitudinally extending opening 11 communicating with the elongated out out portion 12 provided in the bottom of the rear portion of the stem. Extending through the longitudinal opening 11 and also through the tubular member 9 is the'fieXible wire 13. The forward end thereof is secured to the central portion of the ejector disc 8 as illustrated at 14:. The rear end of the flexible wire 13 is disposed within the cut out portion 12 and secured on the end there of is the finger piece 15, the latter extending downwardly below thebottom'of the stem 3 and providing a means for actuating the flexible wire and the ejector member in the manner to be presently apparent.
Normally the parts of the cleaning attachment embodying my attachment are disposed in a manner as illustrated in Figure 2 and the smoking pipe may be used in the usual manner. ,Vhen it is desired to clean the pipe by removing the tobacco and ashes from the bowl, the person using the pipe moves the finger piece forwardly in the cut out portion 12 simultaneously causing a forward movement of the flexible wire 13 and as the latter passes through the upwardly curved tubular member 9, the ejector member 8 will be raised upwardly within the bowl causing the tobacco and ashes to be discharged from the top of the bowl and also the edge of the ejector disc will scrape the inner wall of the bowl thus preventing the collection of the tobacco on the inner wall of the bowl. When the ejector member has reached the top of the bowl, all of the tobacco and ashes will have been removed from the bowl, thereby cleaning the latter. By moving the finger piece 15 rearwardly in the cut out portion 12, the ejector member 8 is returned to its normal position so that the same will be seated on the annular shoulder 5. The bowl may then be filled with a fresh supply of tobacco when the pipe is again to be used.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a cleaning attachment has been provided which may be incorporated with a smoking pipe in such a manner as not to interfere with the ordinary use of t 1e pipe. Furthermore, the cleaning attachment will permit the bowl of the pipe to be readily and easily cleaned without the loss of any considerable length of time or labor.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts-may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a smoking pipe wherein the latter comprises a bowl, a stem. and a mouth piece, of a cleaning attachment for the bowl, the same comprising a disc 11 normally disposed in the bottom of the bowl below the outlet provided in the bowl for the passage of the smoke, said disc adapted for ieciprocatory movement in said bowl, means for actuating the same, said means comprising a flexible wire extending into said bowl and secured to said disc, an upwardly curved tubular member arranged in the bottom of the bowl below said ejector and through which the forward portion of the flexible wire is adapted to extend, and means associated with the opposite end of the flexible wire for actuating the'same.
2. In combination with a smoking pipe wherein the latter comprises a bowl, a stem, 3
and a mouth piece, of a cleaning attachment for the bowl, the same comprising a disc normally disposed in the bottom of the bowl below the outlet provided in the bowl for the passage of the smoke, said disc adapted for reciprocatory movement 7 in said bowl means for actuating the same, said means comprising aflexible wire extending into said bowl and secured to said disc, an upwardly curved tubular member arranged in the bottom of the bowl below said ejector and through which the forward portion of the flexible wire is adapted to extend, means associated with the opposite end oi": the flexible wire for actuating the same. said last mentioned means comprisinga finger piece operable within a cut out portion provided therefor in the stem.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a smoking pipe bowl cleaner comprising an ejector disc adapted to be located in the bottom of the bowl for sliding movement in said bowl, a guide tube associated with the center of said disc and adapted to be disposed between the disc and bottom of the bowl, and a flexible disc operating wire connected at one end to the center of said disc, said wire being adapted to be slidably mounted upon a stem connected with said bowl and being provided on its other end' with a. finger piece.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH ADAM BENNETT.
