UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND I-IOLBERG, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,918, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed August 3, 1895.
T0 aZZ whOm/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND IIOLBERG, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to pipes; and the object thereof is to provide an improvement in this class of devices by means of which the pipe may be cleaned and the stem thereof cleansed of any impurities that may collect therein at any time; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a central longitudinal section .of apipe and the stem thereof provided with my improvement, and Figs. 2 and 3 represent details of the construction.
In the practice of my invention I employ an ordinary pipe, the central bore B of the stem of which communicates with the bowl 0 at the bottom thereof, which is preferably concaved, as shown in Fig. 1, and the central bore B of the stem of the pipe extends a short distance past the opening D in the bottom of the bowl, which communicates therewith.
WVithin the outer end of the stem is a screwthreaded tube or sleeve E, which is provided with a screw-threaded extension with which the mouthpiece F is connected, and the inner end of the screw-threaded tube or sleeve E is provided with cross-bars, which are in the form of a wheel, as shown at G, Fig. 3, with which central portion of said wheel is connected a rod II, which extends inwardly past the opening in the bottom of the bowl of the pipe and is provided with a disk K.
The tube or sleeve E may or may not be provided with a shoulder or flange L, against Serial No. 558,114- (No model.)
which the mouthpiece abuts. If this shoulder or flange is not provided, however, the
mouthpiece will abut against the end of the stem B, as will be readily understood. By means of this construction any dirt or substance of any kind which may pass from the bowl of the pipe into the stem may be readily removed therefrom by removing the mouthpiece within the tube or sleeve E and drawing out the rod H, with the piston K at the inner end thereof, and it will readily be seen that by reason of this construction any nicotine or fluids from the mouth that my collect within the stem of the pipe may also be removed therefrom, and the stem maybe thoroughly cleansed by removing the tube E, with the rod H and the disk thereon, as hereinbefore described.
It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construction and operation and which is comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and-desire to secure byLetters Patent A pipe provided with a stem having an enlarged bore extending beyond the opening in the bottom of the bowl of the pipe, an exteriorly-screw-threaded sleeve having screwthreaded connection with the extremity of said stem, said sleeve having an interior web or spider with a central opening, a rod pro vided with a disk adapted to rest in the extremity of said bore beyond said opening, the other end of said rod being secured in the opening in said spider and a mouthpiece secured on said sleeve, whereby when said sleeve ,is disconnected and withdrawn said disk will be drawn through said bore to clean the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 25th day of July, 1895.
' FERDINAND HOLBERG.
