TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D c, 23, 1913.
application filed January 28. 1913. Serial No. 744,761.
To i1 ic/wm it may concern i Be it known that we, l xo L. M. Ztz'rrr-znl s'rnmr and CHARLES G. 'ilcnsrnuir, residing at Hartford, in the county of llart l'jord and l State of (.onnecticut', have invented certain i l). i; and useful improvements in 'lobaccot Pipes; and we do hereby declare the followmg to be afull, clear, and exact tltlfit lflpl'ltm. of the invention, such as will enable others it! skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
TlllS invention relates to tobacco pipes; i and it consistsin providing a-slidable cleani ing device in the ste n of the pipe as herein;
. after fully describedandclanned.
in the drawings, l i; ,'ure,ll is a longitudi- 'n al section through a pipegprovided with i a, cleaner according to this invention. Fig. l 2 is a cross-section through-the pipe stem l and the cleaner, drawn to; greatly enlarged size for clearncss. -The P stem 2- is provided with a straighi tylindriczil hole 3 which extends through itsniouthpieee 4, when a separate mouthpiece is used, and through an extension 5 of the stem on the opposite side of the bowl 6 from the mouthpiece. The hole 3 extends crosswise of the bowl and the. bottom 7 of the bowl is arranged level with the bottom of the hole.
and is thrust into the Front. end of the hole 3 in the extension 5, the end portion of the hole being suitably tapered to receive the.
plug. The plug preferably has a head 9 for convenience 'in removing it.
The cleaner consists of a long corrugated scraper 10, preferably formed of a flat strip of metal or of any other suitable material.
40 This scraper has angular corrugations the sides-of which are inclined in opposite directions alternately in :ubstantially parallel planes" so that angular scrapers 12 are forrne which engagr with the pipe stem A removable tapering plug 8 is provided as shown in Fig. 2, and which scrape out the stem in a very etlicient manner and do not. obstruct it so that the pipe will not draw freely. 'lhcse angle-shaped scrapers are revolvcd by means of the plug when the cleaner is partially rein p'ed, and the scraplugs are caught in the corrugations and are removed by pulling out the cleaner. When a spiral cleaner is used, it rubs the dirtagainst the sides of the stem and does not scrape imoil as efiieiently as the angle-shaped 58 scrapers. This corrugated scraper is so.- cured at one end to the plug'8, and it extends longitudinally in the hole'3 through the bottom poition of the bowl of the pipe I to within a short-distance of the front end 60 of the mouthpiece. The corrugated scraper is prbportioned to the hole. 330 that'it will bear against the sides? of the hole-but will not obstructitsofthzit the pipe-will not draw. I 5; The pipe steni and the bottom of the owl j are cleaned out and'fi'eedfroni obstruct-ions by revolving the scraper and withdrawing it frointhe hole. 1 What we claim is: i The combination,- with a tobacco pipe having a hole in the front end of' its bowl in line with its stem, of a plug insertedin the said hole, and a cleaner formed of z'bfiat strip provided with angular rbrrugit tions the sides of which are inclined in o f positc directionsalternately in 'substantial y: parallel planes and 'which forma series of f angle-shaped scrapers the points of which engage with the pipe stem. v
In testimony wheiep f we, atlix our signat ur r, in presence of two witnesses.
