Description

Jan. 5,1926. 1,568,392
. S. F. ABERNATHY PI PE CLEANER Filed June 1, 1925 {)nucufoz 3;; I I f o Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIPE CLEANER.
Application filed June 1, 1925.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FRANKLIN ABERNATHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Bandolph and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Pipe Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning pipes and more particularly to sewer pipe cleaners.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that it may be used as a sewer drag for removing chunks of paper, sand obstructions and the like therefrom and which is also capable of cutting roots in sewers.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will permit water to pass freely through the device and which will pick up and drag out all obstructions contained in the pipe.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a pipe cleaner constructed in accordance with this invention;
' Figure 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
In the embodiment illustrated a handle member 1 is shown which is preferably made tubular for lightness and to which is secured at diametrically opposite points metal straps 2 and 3 which are secured thereto being here shown.
Serial No. 34,153.
by any means preferably by riveting and which project beyond the front end of the handle member and diverge as shown at 4. These diverging arms 4; merge at their front ends into parallel arms 5 which are connected at longitudinally spaced intervals by annular metal bands 6 and 7. These bands are arranged on the outer faces of the arms 5 and have secured to their outer faces a plurality of cleaning fingers 8, any desired number of which may be employed, four These fingers 8 extend some distance beyond the band 6 and are provided with cutting edges 9 at their free ends and with inwardly extending inclined prongs 10 which are designed to engage obstructions such as chunks of paper and the like when the device is withdrawn from the pipe and remove it with them.
This cleaner permits water to flow freely through it without in any way obstructing it and yet will pick up chunks of papers and the like and out roots during its passage through the pipes. It may be operated by means of pipe sections connected with the member 1 and the device is pushed from one man hole to the other as it is well known that sewer lines run straight and make turns only at the man holes.
I claim In a device of the character described, supporting arms, annular bands secured to the supporting arms in spaced relation with each other, fingers secured to the bands, said fingers having substantially wide cutting ends, inwardly extended prongs secured to the fingers adjacent to the ends thereof, and a handle having connection with the supporting arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
SAM FRANK ABERNATHY.
