DEVICE FOR REMOVING OBSTBUC'IIONS FROM DRAIN-PIPES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HARRY E. ASBURY and VILBUR C. ATKINSON, citizens of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, Vania, have invented certain Improvements in Devices for Removing Obstructions from Drain-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

One object of our invention is to provide a simple and effective means for cleaning and removing ipes.

A further object of the invention is to construct the device so that, when it is retracted, the hooks will open to the full diameter of the pipe; removing any material lodged therein. i

In the accompanying drawing -Figure 1, is a side view of our improved cleaning device for drain pipes; Fig. 2, is a view showing the device located in a drain pipe and expanded; Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line a-a, Fig. 2; Fig. 4., is a sectional view through the head and coupling; Fig. 5, is a detached perspective view of the head; and Fig. 6, is a detached perspective view of one of the pivoted hooks.

1 is a rod, which may be of any'length desired. This rod is screwed into a coupling 2 which in' turn is screwed onto a threaded stem 1 projecting from the outer part of a head 3.- This head 3 is made in two parts 5 and 6, each part is slotted at 7 to receive the pivoted hooks 8, shown in 6. In the present instance, there are five of these hooks, but the number may be varied according to the size of the device. In each part of the head Sare sockets 9 for the rounded. pivot projections 10 on. the hooks hooks can be contracted, as in Fig. 1, as the device is inserted in the drain pipe, or expanded when the device is withdrawn quickly from the pipe, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Each hook 8 is shaped as illustrated in Fig. 1 and has a'sharp'projecting point 11 at its outer endwith an vi'nturned portion 12 at its inner end, so that, when the device is projected into the pipe'and turned, the sharp points will cut into and loosen the material which is lodged in the-"pipe and it can be easily removed therefrom. -By turning. thedevice the longitudinal edges of the hooks, which are also comparatively Specification of Letters Patent. sharp, will also tend to cut into the material, such as roots and other foreign matter. After the device has been projected beyond the obstruction it is quickly withdrawn. This action opens the jaws, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the work of removing the foreign matter is quickly and effectively performed.

It will be understoodthat the inner ends of the hooks are rounded, as at 13, so as to ride upon the inner surface of the pipe; these rounded edges making it impossible for' the device to engage the pipe at the joints.

The rod or tube 1 may be made in short sections connected together by couplings 1 1, Fig. 1, so that, when it is desired to remove any foreign matter from a drain pipe, the pipe can be broken at a designated point and the device forced into the pipe toward the obstruction, and section after section can be coupled until the obstruction has reached or passed. The device can be readily removed from the pipe, bringing with it the roots and other foreign matter, be uncoupled at the opening; thus limiting the amount of drain pipe necessary to be broken or removed.

We claim 1. The combination head coupled to the rod, each of said parts having radial slots and sockets on each side of the slots; with a series of hooks mounted in the slots of the head and having pivot projections adapted to the sockets.

2. The combination in a device for removing obstructions from drain pipes, of a rod; a head coupled thereto; and a series of rearwardly extending hooks pivotally mounted in the head and having sharp points extending in advance of the head.

3. The combination of a rod; a head, said head having radial slots therein; hooks pivotally mounted in the slots and having sharp points at one end beyond the pivots and rounded extensions at the rear of the pivots, so that, when the device is expanded, the rounded portions of the books will bear against the inner wall of the pipe.
