No. 559,485. Patented May 5, 1896.
INVEN TOR WITNESSES:
ATTOHNEY'Jf UNITED TATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. GRAU, OF IVASIIINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 559,485, dated May 5, 1896.
Application filed November '7, 1895. Serial No. 568,197. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. GRAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vashingtomin the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to tobacco-pipes, and the objects thereof are to provide apipe which is substantially of the usual form and which is also provided with means to prevent the clogging or fouling of the stem, and also to prevent fine tobacco or other substances from entering the stem from the bowl.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a parts, said drawing being a central vertical section of my improved pipe and its attachments.
In the practice of my invention I provide a pipe comprising the usual bowl A, the usual stem 13, and the usual detachable mouthpiece 0.
The stem B is provided with a central bore 1), and the inner end thereof is contracted and communicates with the bowl of the pipe by means of a small passage 19, and formed in the upper side of the stem is an inclined opening D, in which is set a tubular plug G, each end of which is closed, the inner end being closed by an inclined plate g and the outer end by a cap g, and this tubular plug G is preferably filled with cotton or similar packing material. The cap g is preferably removably connected with said tubular plug, and passing through said cap and through said tubular plug into the central bore of the stem and through the small passage or opening Z2 is a wire or rod II, provided at its outer end with a head or handle 7L, and by means of the head or handle it the wire or rod H may be withdrawn from the passage 1) or inserted therethrough, whenever desired.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. The wire or rod II is intended to prevent the passage of small particles of tobacco or other material into the stem of the pipe, while being small enough to allow of the passage of smoke and air into the stem, and said rod Gr may be moved backand forth for the purpose of cleaning the passage 1), whenever desired, without annoyance of removing the tobacco from the bowl. It will be understood, of course, that if any nicotine or other substances should collect in the stem B the mouthpiece C may be removed and said stem thoroughly cleansed, and in this operation the tubular plug G may also be removed, if desired.
My invention isnot limited to the exact form, construction, and operation of the various parts thereof as herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, its
construction and operation, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pipe of the character herein shown and described provided with the usual tubular stem in the outer end of which is secured a mouthpiece having a capillary bore the bowl communicating with the bore of the stem by a horizontal passage or opening on a line with the bottom of the bowl, said bore having formed in the upper side thereof an opening in which is secured a plug, the inner end of which is closed by an inclined plate and the outer end by a cap to which is secured a wire rod passing through said inclined plate and the passage between the bowl and the stem, said tube being provided with packing material, whereby smaller particles of tobacco are prevented from being forced into the stem of the pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of November, 1895. p
- JOHN M. GRAU.
