F.'KUESTNBR.
I SMOKING 'PIPE.
No. 341,150. Patented May 4, 18861 WITNESSES: IN OR ATT EYS,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND KUESTNER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
- SMOKING-PIPE.
QQPECIPEGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341.150, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed April 29, 1884. Serial No. 129,704. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND KUESTNER, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved smokingpipe in which the only substances containing nicotine are collected and prevented from entering the stern of the pipe, and in which the parts composing the pipe are detachable, so as to be easily and thoroughly cleansed; and the invention consists of apipebowl having a bottom opening and a longitndinally-perforated neck or socket communicating with said opening, a pipe-stem fitted tightly into a seat at the upper end of the socket, an extensiontube passing through the socket and provided with a slot facing the bottom opening of the bowl, and a screwcap attached to the lower end of the extension-tube, whereby the stem is firmly secured to the bowl. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved smoking-pipe. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the bowl of a sinoking-pipe,wl1ichis providedwithacover,a, and an opening, a, at the bottom of the bowl, connecting the inner space of the same with the longitudinally-perlorated neck or socket B, that is made integral with the body of the bowl and extended below and above the same. The upper end of this socket B has a tapering recess or seat, b, for the correspondingly tapering end of the stem 0. To the stem 0 is connected a metallic extension'tube, D, by a screw-thread at its upper end. The extension-tube passes downward through the perforation of the socket B, and is retained in the same by a cap, E, screwed onto the lower threaded end of the tube D, whereby the lower end of the stem is pressed into the cor; responding recess, 1), of the socket B, so as to produce a tight fitting of the stem.
The extension-tube D is provided with aslot, (1, that is in line with the bottom openinto said tube. By this arrangement the sediment is also collected outside of the tube D in the lower part of the socket B.
By unscrewing the screw-cap E,remov1ng the tube D, and unscrewing the stem 0 from the tube D, all the parts of the pipe can be easily and thoroughly cleansed.
As there is an annular air-space between the extension-tube D and the socket B, the former is not heated up by contact with the surrounding parts of the socket and bowl; consequently the smoke is cooled in passing through the extension-tube D to the stem 0, whereby smoking is rendered more agreeable.
I am aware that patents have been granted for pipes resembling mine in many particulars; but none of these pipes show the annular space located in the bowl and the inner lining connected with the stem in the manner I have described and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a pipe'bowl provided with a tubular neck open at both ends, said bowl and neck being connected bya duct, and the upper end of said neck having a conical recess, a draft-tube screw-threaded at both ends and provided with an intermediate slot, said draft-tube being of smaller diameter than the interior of said neck, whereby an annular chamber is formed between them, a pi pe-stem having an interior screw-thread at its lower end and a conical exterior surface at said end, whereby it is adapted to fit the conical recess of the neck and connect with the screw FERDINAND KUESTN ER.
