Description
(No Model.)
O. S. BAILEY.
TOBACCO PIPE.
No. 493,325. Patented Mar. 14, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. BAILEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. REED, OF SAME PLACE.
TOBACCO-PI PE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,325, dated March 14, 1893. Application filed April 16, 1892. Serial No.429,468. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S..BAILEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of
which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the 1 same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved tobacco-pipe; Fig. 2 a vertical transverse sec- I5 tion of the bowl; Fig. 3 a planview of the bowl with the cap removed; Fig. 4 a face view of the plug, and Fig. 5 a plan view of the plug detached.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a tobacco-pipe which is designed for being carried in the pocket, the improvement relating to means for preventing the hot coals or ashes of the burning tobacco from falling from the pipe; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper 0 and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the bowl of a pipe which is preferably oval in form and is provided in its side near its bottom with a removable nipple, b, having an annular flange,
0 d, at its outer end to retain a flexible tube or stem, B. The upper end or mouth of the bowl is rabbeted and exteriorly screw-threaded at, f. The cap, D, is interiorly threaded to turn onto said mouth and engage ashoulder formed by said rabbet. At the inner end of said threads a shoulder, g, is formed and across the cap there is a screen, 71, of wire-cloth secured. The apex of the cap is tapped and interiorly screw-threaded at, j, to receive the screw-plug, C. The opening formed by the tapping is connected bya hole or small opening, m, with the chamber, 17, in the cap above The opening, m, is covered by the screen, h.
a similar screen, It. In the top of the charm ber, 10, around the central opening, m, there is a series of fines or openings, 1". The plug,
C, is chambered interiorly above the screen,
70, at, t, and air-openings, o, are formed leading into said chamber.
In use to fill the pipe the cap, D, is removed and the tobacco, H, is inserted and lightedin the usual manner; the cap then being replaced the top of the bowl is covered by the screen, It. The air-openings, '0, '1', form sufficient space for the current of air and afford 55 proper draft for the pipe. The pipe may be disposed in the pocket from which the stem may protrude. The screens, 7?), k, prevent the ashes and fire effectually from falling through the air openings in the cap or plug, the cham- 7o bers, p, 25, serving to retain the same should the pipe become upset.
I do not confine myself to screwing the cap onto the bowl as it may be provided with a bayonet-joint or any other suitable means. Nor do I confine myself to any particular arrangement of screens so long as the air-chambers described are provided.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is So 1. A tobacco -pipe bowl, screw-threaded around its mouth in combination with a detachable concave screw-cap adapted to be turned onto said bowl and cover the mouth thereof, and provided with air openings in its top, and a screen of wire cloth detachably secured in the mouth of said cap, and of a diameter to span the mouth of said bowl when the cap is secured thereon, substantially as described. 0
2. In a tobacco-pipe a bowl, in combination with a screw-cap covering the mouth of said bowl, an opening in the top of said cap, a screw-plug in said opening provided with airvents, a screen across said opening and a 5 screen across the mouth of said cap all being arranged substantially as set forth.
3. In a tobacco-pipe the combination with the bowl with the cap, D, provided with the screens, h, k, the chambered screw-plug in said cap and air openings in said cap and plug, substantially as described.
CHARLES S. BAILEY.
