UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. WARDEN, J 3., OF EADS, COLORADO.
MAGAZINE TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WARDEN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Eads, in the county of Kiowa, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine Tobacco- Pipes; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in magazine tobacco pipes and the object of my invention is to improve the construction and increase the efficiency of pipes'of the above described character.
A further object of my invention is to provide a magazine adapted to be attached to a pipe of the customary construction and proportioned to hold several charges of tobacco, said magazine being so attached that it may be moved to operative position to discharge a portion of its contents within the bowl of the pipe.
WVith these and other objects in view, my invention will be more fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment "of my device and then specifically pointed out in the claim which is attached to and forms a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe in normal position. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section showing the magazine in position forfilling the pipe.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, I have shown my improved magazine attached to a conventional form of brier pipe 10 having the customary form of bit 11, the end of the brier portion of the stem being bound with the usual metallic ring 12. Hinged by one end to the upper portion of this ring is a cylindrical casing 13 which forms the magazine of the pipe and which is provided at its rear end with a hinged closure 14 which may be readily opened to permit the filling of the magazine with tobacco. Telescopically mounted in the forward end of this casing is a tubular discharge member 15 fitting closely within the casing 13 and having a reduced downwardly directed dis- Specification of Letters Patent.

charge spout 16 also provided-with a hinged closure 17 which is normally held in closed position by a leaf spring 18. The discharge member 15 is provided adjacent its free end with one part of a two part catch 19 the other part of which is carried by the pipe as shown. This catch not only serves to normally hold the magazine against swinging upon its hinge but also holds the discharge member against movement in the casing 13.
In operation the magazine is filled with tobacco and when the pipe is to be filled the catch 19 is released and the forward end of the magazine is swung upwardly while at the same time the discharge member 15 is drawn out to extended position to bring its forward end in position over the bowl of the pipe as shown in Fig. 2. The closure 17 is then swung open when the pipe is tipped in such a manner as to cause the tobacco to run through the magazine into the pipe bowl.
In practice the magazine will be preferably constructed of non-oxidizable metal and may be ornamented in any desired manner.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided an extremely simple form of magazine pipe, the construc tion being such that if desired, the magazine may be attached to any conventional style of pipe.
It will of course be understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without in the slightest degree departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is The combination with a tobacco pipe, of a cylindrical casing open at both ends and hinged by one end to the stem of the pipe, said hinged end being provided with a closure, a discharge member telescopically mounted in said casing and having its forward end extending beyond the same, means for locking said discharge member to the pipe stem, and a hinged closure for said dis charge member.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
