WALTER C. ROGERS, OF KILKENNY, MINNESOTA.
SMOKING-PIPE.
Application filed April G, 1916.
T ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that l, lVALTEn C. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kilkenny, in the county of Lesueur and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to smoking pipes, and it has particular reference, to a smoking pipe which is equipped with a magazine for holding a supply of tobaccov and with means for transferring tobacco from the magazine to the bowl of the pipe while an ignited portion of a previous charge is still contained in the bowl, thus enabling the smoking of the pipe to be continued without interruption as long as any tobacco remains in the magazine.
The invention has for its object to simplify and improve the construction of the magazine and the means for transferring tobacco from the magazine to the bowl.
Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the naturev of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred for-m of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the plunger in retracted position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the plunger projected in the act of charging the bowl. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. llis a sectional view taken on the line 1e-4.- in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5--5 in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the guide tube for the plunger.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
rlhe invention has been shown applied to an ordinary tobacco pipe, the bowl of which is designated by and the stem by 16, said stem having a bore 17 opening at one end into the bowl at 18 and communicating at Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dan. 16, 1917.,
serial no. 89,392.
the other end with the mouth piece 19 which is inserted into an enlarged threaded portion 20 of the bore.
The stem is provided in the upper portion thereof with a longitudinal groove or recess 21 in which is fitted an approximately tubular guide`22, one end of which extends into an aperture 23 formed in the bowl adjacent to the stem and opening into the bowl some distance above the port 18 of the bore 17. The other end of the tubular guide .is provided with notches 23 engaged by a ferrulc 24 which is fitted on the end of the stem 17 and which thus assists in securing the tubular guide in position on the stem. The tubular guide 22 has a longitudinal slot 25 adia cent to which longitudinal flanges 26 are formed forthc attachment of the magazine 27. The latter consists of a cylinder having a longitudinal slot 28 through which, when the cylinder is mounted in position, its interior communicates with the slot of the tubular guide 22. The magazine, which may be mounted and secured in any convenient manner on the flanges 26 of the guide, has been shown as being provided near one end with a saddle piece 29 resting on the ferrule 24. One end of the magazine which is closed abuts on the bowl 15; the other end of the magazine which is open is provided with a lid or cover 30 which may be pivotally or otherwise movably connected therewith. The tubular guide 22 accommodates a longitudinally movable plunger 31 which may be actuated by means of a handle 32 that extends through a slot 33 in the side wall of the tubular guide. When the plunger is pressed in the direction of the bowl to the limit of its movement, the inner end of said plunger will lie flush with the interior of the bowl. The plunger has been shown as being provided in its underside with a longitudinal groove or recess 34 for the purpose of clearing that portion of the ferrule 24 which projects above the longitudinal recess 21 in the pipe stem.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that normally communication is cut off between the bowl and the magazine by the plunger 31. When the pipe bowl as well as the magazine is charged with tobacco, the tobacco contained in the bowl may be ignited and consumed in the usual manner. When the bowl is nearly empty, by manipulating the plunger, a portion of the tobacco contained in the magazine will pass into the tubular guide and may be forced from the latter into the pipe bowl directly below that layer of tobacco which is still ignited, the ignited layer being forced upward by the introduction of the charge from the magazine. One or more charges may thus be transferred from the magazine to the bowl by manipulation of the plunger. This operation may be repeated as often as may be necessary, and the smoker may thus continue the enjoyment of the pipe without necessity of relighting the same for a period which is only limited by the capacity of the magazine.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
l. A smoking pipe comprising a stem and a bowl, amagazine supported on the stem adjacent to the bowl, a guide tube intermediate the bowl and the magazine, said tube being in communication with the bowl and also with the magazine, and a plunger operating in the guide tube to transfer the contents of the magazine to the bowl.
2. In a smoking pipe, a bowl having a stem provided with the customary longitudinal bore, said stem having also a recess communicating with an .aperture in the bowl above the longitudinal bore, a guide tube fitted in the recess and extending into the aperture of the bowl, said guide having a longitudinal slot and flanges adjacent thereto, a magazine supported on the iianges and having a slot communicating with the slot in the tubular guide, and a manually operable plunger` movable in the 'longitudinal guide.
3. In a smoking pipe, a bowl having a stem provided with the customary longitudinal bore, said stem having also a recess communicating with an aperture in the bowl above the longitudinal bore, a guide tube fitted in the recess and extending into the aperture of the bowl, said guide having a longitudinal slot and flanges adjacent thereto, a magazine supported on the ianges and having a slot communicating with the slot in the tubular guide, and a manually operable plunger movable in the longitudinal guide, said plunger having a handle and the tubular guide having a slot through which the handle extends.
4. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl and a stem, the latter having an annular groove and the bowl having an aperture communieating with said annular groove, a ferrulc on the stem, a tubular guide extending at one end into the aperture of the bowl and provided at its other end with notches engaging the ferrule, said tubular guide having a longitudinal slot and ianges adjacent thereto, a magazine supported and secured on the flanges and having a longitudinal slot communicating with the slot of the tubular guide, a plunger slidable in the tubular guide and having in its underside a recess to accommodate the ferrule, and means for operating the plunger.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
