To fil/.Z whom 't may concern.'
Be it known that l, Manton J. DtTToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Groseclose in the county of Wythe and State of Virginia., have invented a new and useful Pencil; and l do hereby declare the followingv to be a full, clear, and exact descripl ion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 4make and use the saine.
This invention relates to the art of pencils and the like, and particularly to a new and useful pencil holder.
As one ot the, objects of the invention, it is thc aiin lo provide a pencil holder having' means. whereby the lead pencil may be retracted within the holder, so as to preserve the pencil point, when not in rise.
A. further object of the invention is the provision ol a holder having a retractable socket member, in which the lead pencil is frietionally held, esp'eciallywhen the'sojkct member is retracted, but when extended, sin-ine' portions or' the socket. member are depressed automatically, in order to irmly agrip the lead pencil to prevent the same from receding'.v when pressure is applied npon the pencil.V I
"here are disclosed in the drawing certain tentures of construction, but in practi.
cal lields these features may necessitate alieralionsani which thepatentee is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended wilhin the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises furtherrfeatincs and combination ot parts. as hereinafter ,set l'orlin shown in the drawings, and claimed.
ln the drawings': Figure l is a view in perspective of the inn'iroved pencil holder conslrneied in accordance with the invention. Fig. is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the socket member with the pencil therein extended Veadv for use. Fig'. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the socket member retracted. Fig. l is a detail view.
lhl'erring lo the drawings lA designates the einer .shell *or tubular men'iber of the holder havingl a bayonet slot 2 in its cirrnnrln-ential wall near the upper end thereof. Mounted in said shell is a retractable socket nuanber 5l. This socket member is in llie lornroi a lube.I but at one end is provideil with a solid portion 4, in which a stud is threaded. This stud moves longitudinally in the bayonet slot 2, and is pro` vided 'wil 'ii a thumb nut. (i. to hold the socket member extended, especially to prevent the socket member from receding, when pressure is applied upon the pencil. When the socket member is retracted against the action of the coil spring' 7 (which is interposed between `the solid end of lthe socket member and the' upper end of the shell l), a slight partial rotary movement is imparted to the socket. member, in order to cause the stud 5 te engage the oilset notch or recess 8 at one end o'l the bayonet slot, so* as to hold the socket member retracted. The socket member 3 is designed to lio-ld a section of lead pencil 9 frictionally therein, so as to move with the socket member. One end of the socket member is provided with spring arms l0 having lugs o-r lateral portions ll. lll/'hen the socket member is extended. the free ends ot' the spring arms engage inclined portions 12 of the shell, so as to cause the lugs or lateral portions l1 to bite int-o the Wood of the lead pencil, and when the thumb nut is tightened Jfrictionally against the shell l., the socket member is prevented from receding, when pressure is applied upon the pencil, while the lugs or lateral portions 1l will prevent the pencil proper from recedingl in' the socket member. lVhen it is desired to remove the bencil proper from the socket member. the said member is slightly retracted, so that the spring arms will spring outwardly, aller which the pencil may be withdrawn. A. conical cap or cover 13 is threaded on one end of the shell, and is provided with a hole 14 at the tapering end ot the cap, le receive the pencil point. y"lhe solid end of the socket member is provided with a `sleeve socket extension 15, in which one end o'l" the coil spring,r 7 is seated.
From the foregoingl it is to be ascertained, that there has` been devised a simple and ellicient lead pencil holder, especially adapted 'for holding sections of lead pencils, and one which has'been found practicable.
The invention having; been set forth. what is claimed as new and useful is:-
ln combinzniion, a shell member open at onel end and closed at the other end, and pro-vided with an' elongated slot in the wall of the shell adjacent the closed end, said shell on the interior thereof adjacent the opened end having an annular inclined portion; an elongated tube open at one end and closed at. the other telescopieally arranged in the shell, and in'ovided at ils` closed end with an enlarged head having; a sleeve -socket extension, Whilethe open end off thetube is provided with a seres of spring arms terminating in lugs adapted to embed in the Ayood of a pencil received by the tube, 0W- ing to the arms contacting with the inclined portion of the shell; a spring interposed betweenV 'the closedend of the shell and the sleeve socket eXtension, to hold the tube-*eX- tended whereby the arms are pressed toward the pencil by the inclined portion; a threadedprojectlonor lug carried by the enlarged head and extendlng through the elongated 'slot to guide the tube; and means threadedon the "p roj'ection'to 4hold the tube in ad justed positions against the action of the 15' spring; said slot having' an offset notclrat one end to receive the projection to hold the -tube fully retracted against the actionofthe spring. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 1n the presence of v y l MARION J.- BUTTON. Witnesses:
