TOBACCO-PIPE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,127, dated September 26, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN Hovr, of Stem ford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smoking-Pipes; and I do hereby delare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the bowl ofa tobacco-pipe, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top view of my invention.

My invention consists in the employment or use, in a pipe having a nicotine-chamber below the bowl thereof, of a perforated disk or diaphragm arranged below the smoke passage from the bowl to the stem in such manner that the smoke will come in contact with the said disk or diaphragm, and thus be caused to deposit the nicotine it may contain without passing through the nicotine-chamber, as will be hereinafter explained.

To enable others to understand myinvention, I will proceed to describe it.

'A represents the bowlof the pipe, and B the stem thereof, both of the ordinary or any suitable form or material.

C is a disk or diaphragm, which is perforated, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2, and which is of a size that will allow its insertion in the bowl of the pipe. To this diaphragm there is attached a tube, a, which extends through the bottom of the pipe. On thelower end of this tube a a screw-thread, b, is cut, on which is screwed the nicotine-chamber D.

There is a space, I), left between the bottom surface of the bowl and the diaphragm for the reception of the nicotine and other poisonous matters as they fall through the perforations in the diaphragm 5 and holes 0 are cut through the tube to allow the nicotine, 850., in the bottom of the bowl to pass down into the nicotinechamber D through the said tube.

By this arrangement I obtain all the advantages of a pipe provided with a nicotine-chamber, and at a much less expense than with such pipes as ordinarily constructed, for the reason that the parts can be-more cheaply made, little accuracy in their fitting being required. Again, unless all the parts in a pipe where the smoke is made to pass through a nicotinechamber in order to deposit its poisonous matters are kept very clean, the smoke is more or less impregnated with the disagreeable odor of these parts, which creates a nauseating effect upon the smoker; but by my arrangement the smoke in its passage from the bowl of the pipe to the mouth does not come in contact with the nicotine chamber, only with the disk or diaphragm. The diaphragmis so arranged that the smoke must come in contact with it before passing to the stem of the pipe, and this contact with a metallic surface cools the smoke,

and therefore causes it to depositnicotine and other poisonous matters, which readily run through the diaphragm down into the nicotinechamber. Again, the parts can all be cleaned very quickly, it being only necessary to unscrew the nicotine-chamber, when the diaphragm and tube will fall out of the bowl of the pipe upon reversing the same, and thus these two parts (the nicotine chamber and diaphragm, with its tube attached) are the only ones that will need cleaning. Again, the draft of the pipe is in no way interfered with; but where the smoke is caused to pass through a nicotine-chamber it oftentimes is.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The disk or diaphragm 0, arranged in the bowl of the pipe below the smoke-passage, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the tube a and diaphragm O with the bowl A and nicotine-chamber D, substantially as shown and described.
