Description

CHARLES F. HITSELBERGER, 0F LIBERTYTOWN, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 107,495, dated September 20, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN `SMOKING-PIPES kme- The Schedule referred to in these LettersvPatent and making part of tue sama.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES l0. Hltrsnnninicnn, of Libertytown, in the county of Frederick and State ot' Maryland, have invented a new and improved Smoking-Pipe; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use theV same, reference being` had yto the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates .to improvements in smokingpipes, and consists in a pipe provided with a nicotinecup, attached to the bow,l,`a water-vessel, for cooling and purifying the smoke, on an intermediate tube leading from the bowl to the stem, and a saliva-cup, attached to the lower end of the latter, all arranged in a way calculated to protect the smoker from the nicotine, heat, and other offensive tastes of thel tobacco, 'and to prevent the stoppage of the smoke'- passage.
lhe drawing is a sectional elevation ot' my improved pipe. g
A is the bowl, which is \screwed into a vertical screw-threaded hole in the upper side of one end of' an intermediate pipe, B, connecting, at its other end, with the stern C, by screwing into its side.
The bottom otthe screw-threaded hole, E, which receives the bowl A, has a small hole, F, leading into a nicotine-cup, G, screwing onto a stud at the lower side of B.
The passage H, for the'smoke, leads out. of E, near www the top, through B into the water-cup I, suspended from the lower side of B, near its center.
From I it passes up again, through K, to a cham-V ber, L, in the bottom ot' the stem D, from which a lsmall passage, M, leads down tothe saliva-cup N,
serewirr onto the lower end of D.
The nicotine will be mainly deposited iu G, but, if any be conveyed over to the water, it will be separated there, at the same time'that the smoke is cooled and the other bad tastesare removed by the water.
The smoke, thus cooled and purified, will not `generate saliva inthe mouth as much as smoking with the common pipes does, and what saliva is delivered into the stem of the pipe will fall into cup N, where it will not mix with the nicotine and other deposits from the smoke, which is thc means of stopping the passages so much in common pipes.
The water-vessel may be made of glass, metal, or other substance, as may be preferred.
Having thus described my invention, f
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufact-ure, a smokingpipe, provided with the nicotine-cup Gr, water-cup l,
'and saliva-cup N, all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
' CHARLES F. HITSELBERGER.
