Description

cleat .smc
mili/B;
Letters Patent No. 97 ,997, (lated December 14, 1869.
IMPRpvED BED-BOTTOM.
'The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same the county of Lorain, and State of Oliio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bed- Bottolns; and I dc hereby "declare that the following `is a full and complete'description of lthe saine, reference being had to the acccnipanying drawings, nia-king a. part of `this specification, in which- Figure 1. is atop View of the bed-bottom. Figure 2, a view ot' the side. Figure, a detached section. Like letters ot' refer-nice4 refer to like parts in the several views shown. l l
The `nature otthis invention relates to a. bed-bottom, so construct-cd that a sect-ion ol the head can he x elevated, whereby a person lying, upon the bed can be raised to a recumbent posture. l
In tig. 1, A represents the frame of the bedstead.
' Along the inside of each side rail is a cleat, B, 'on \rhic: 5hrest Athe ends et the lower range of slatsV C,
gOn each of the lower slats rests a spring, D, which is connected to the same at the point x.
E are slats, the extreme ends lof which are .pla-ced upor:1 the extreme ends of thesprings, and thereto secure y i VThe relative posit-ions of the slats and springs to each other are showniu iig; 3.
i This arrangement of slots and springsand which constitutes the bed-bottom, is divided in two sections,
F Gr, section F being attached to section G by means of the hinges 4H,'whereby said section F can be elerated to the position shown in iig. 2, by means of the cams-I, said cams being secured, one at each end of the shaft J, extending across the headot' the bed, to the extreme ends of which are keyed aratchet-wheel, K, and crank K'. Y The practical operation of this adjustablebed-bottom is as follows:
The hinged section is elevated by means of the cams,
which, as they are turned, push up the section, against the under side of which it is made to engage, and thereby eleva-'te it more or less, as may be required, and which is vretained at any degree ci' elevation by the pawl and wheel K I".
This wayof elevating; the head of the bed-bottom is simple and easily pei-termed. It is also neat, and by no means expensive.
What I claim my invention, and desire tol secure by Letters-Patent, is-
A bedstead constructed with cams I, ratchet-wheel and pawl K ]{',.springs 1), and slatsE C, arranged in the manner as described and for the purposespecied.
(E. 1). WALKES.
